Calling all karters

Hi all,

Daytona Motorsport are once again holding the Daytona 24hr kart race in October this year and I am organising the Race Drivers Inc. (www.racedriversinc.com) teams once again. We currently have 4 teams and would like to add more teams whilst also introduce new drivers to RDI at the same time.

I got a email from them the other day about this.

What is actually involved?

I'm off to the MK track on Tuesday with a group of mates, so will try and find out a bit more info then as well.

Based on the past 2 years of this race: You'll need to get to the track at around 8am on the Saturday and register, kart numbers are then pulled out of a hat by the team captains, practice than starts (1-2hrs long) with each driver in the team required to drive 3 laps minimum. The race then starts at 12pm and finishes 12pm on the Sunday.

You can enter teams from 3-10 drivers and you decide everything from strategy to sleeping times etc...

We have raced in most of these types of 24hr events over the past 4 years, from the Daytona 24hr inside Wembley stadium, Le Mans 24hr kart race (which we have 2 spaces that have just become available but that race is next weekend), The British 24hr etc.... and they are always a roller-coaster of emotions and adrenaline as you go through the 24hrs. Each stint is hard work....you have to be fast and consistent but look after your kart at the same time....some people don't like the 3am shift but I love the buzz of pushing yourself to the limit with limited lighting at certain points of the track whilst racing 45 other tired lunatics

Feel free to ask your mates to see if they would like to join us but if your struggling for a full team that won't be a problem as we have spare drivers looking to fill a team.

That could be cool - there was a team of three of us that did the Buckmore 6hr last year who would be my first port of call. I'd guess a full team would need about 6 people or so?

If I can't rustle up enough people for an entry I'd probably be up for the notion of tagging along with you guys. I'd have to warn you though that I'm not all that good!

You have the choice of entering in the 2 or the 4 strokes as both classes are racing. Makes overtaking very interesting!!

The team size is up to you really. I've entered 24hr races in a 3 man team before but you can have up to 10 if you wish.

Legendary engine manufacturer Rotax has supplied their MAX engines to power these machines. The engine is a water cooled 125cc 2 stroke engine with electric starter and centrifugal clutch. Each engine is factory checked, measured and sealed to ensure a level playing field. Power output is around 22hp and will propel the karts to around 75 mph. The karts are a handful and it will take exceptional skill to put you on the top step of the podium.

That's the price difference?

The speed difference is very noticeable on the back straight but it is worth mentioning that the karts do get detuned to 17hp for the race as the engines would struggle to last the full 24hrs. It knocks about 1.5 seconds off your lap depending on your level.

Touch wood we haven't had a wet race yet but if we do you can expect the pro karts to be faster as they are heavier and we'll stay on slick tyre's which will really mix things up!

I'll ask some mates if they want to, but even at the discount price it'll be a stretch as we need to come down from Scotland. Also 2 of them will have started college, one gone into work and i'm off to Uni in September. Unlikely, but I'll see :/

Thanks to James Rutherford who has confirmed that he will race with 1 of our pro kart team's in the this race. The first person from PH to enter with us.....anyone else fancy joining us?

Debated doing this event as it's a hell of a lot cheaper the 24-hour karting at Le Mans, but decided that we'd make the pilgrimage to France again this year, leaving on Thursday morning!

Endurance karting is awesome! The need to be fast, consistent and work as a team is a great experience. There's something quite special about karting at silly o'clock in the morning

Couldn't agree more Alistair. Have fun in Le Mans and if you want to to look at racing in this event after you get back let me know and i'll be glad to help.
