Mansell to test for Williams?

Well, no..I was just making a point really because just about everyone else seems to be throwing their hat in the ring for a Williams seat, including Jeff Gordon. Just saw that Finnish newspapers are suggesting Hakkinen is using BMW links to test the water three years after he retired!
What's the most bizarre driver appointment that Frank Williams could make - assuming a reasonable set of credentials - for a seat in F1? How about Valentino Rossi? Or Colin McRae? Or Jodie Kidd?

its a valid point though. Some of the obvious choices include Nico Rosberg and Nelson Piquet Jr. Its about money not talent. I repeatedly use the example of Mark Hynes as the example, won the F3 championship when Pizzonia and Button came 2nd and 3rd respectively and where is he now?! The appointment of Christian Klein merely confirms this. Williams however do not need the money as much as the other teams so real driving talent does have a chance though we know that Frank does not like paying big money wages and I have no idea what salary IRL/CART drivers are used to!
Until F1 sorts itself out we have very little chance of seeing the driving talent shine though. I enjoyed watching the CART (or whatever it is) at Mexico the other day, drivers having to take their hands of the wheel to change gear! whatever next?!

re; Mark Hynes - He may have won F/Renault but when he moved into Formula 3 he was blown away by all and sundry!.
I think we `ll see Webber and DC with Williams. Young talent is good and should be promoted but age does bring experience (and testing nous!).
i think you will find Marc Hynes was F3 champion in 1999...

It would be cool to see an F1 grid with names like that - especially if they can avoid ending up in the Minardi team! Isn't there a son of Jody Schecter racing somewhere too?
Re Minardi: why do they continue to use rookie drivers who are 4-6seconds off the pace? Surely these guys have no experience to help develop the car (it does have the current fezza engine, right?). Wouldn't they be better off with a seasoned, maybe one or two year past-it, F1 driver to help get the car set up properly and professionally handle some of the PR duties for the sponsor? I'm thinking someone like Alesi or Coulthard?

I can talk fluent PR "Ronspeak", would love to live in Monaco and have a cat-walk model girlfriend, attend press conferences and have my picture taken for advertising purposes.

Answer: £££££££££s and $$$$$$$$$$s
The Minardi is "powered" by a V10 Cosworth which is at least a generation behind the similar engines of Jordan and Jaguar. Sauber have a Ferrari engine of some description...Minardi survive by not paying drivers and drivers bringing in sponsorship and paying for their drives. Its hilarious each year reading Autosport between November and January for the Minardi sag stories as they scrape together the cash to race. I like Paul Stoddart, its a shame Max and bernie dont share my feelings for the guy!

Minardi are using this year the Cosworth CR-3L V10 engine which is circa 2001. Yes it's a three year old design with some new bits added, but still the same as what Jaguar ran in 01. Jaguar in 2004 are running the CR-6.
And apparantly according to official sources Sauber have the same specification engine & gearbox as this years Ferrari and if you believe that.........................
Anthony Davidson's Friday performances has pushed him into the frame for a Williams drive next year.

he has no money according to autosport. they are trying to get enough backing to do the F3000 euroseries or maybe the Dallara Nissan championship but they havent had much success. Huge shame really, he has proved he has the talent to do it on a much bigger stage!......

He's probably driving a car that's a lot harder to handle than todays F1 cars too. It would be nice to see someone make it without going through the traditional FF/F3/F3000 route.

The old man was only 0.1s slower than his son wasn't he?...and bang on the regular driver's pace IIRC.
