Looks like Polish TV have re-created the Kubica crash @20 seconds in:

Surely this means there is a fundamental floor in that type of armco?

I nearly had a crash today,two of the Polish birds that work at the local salad factory were walking to the nearby farm shop in skimpy shorts over their lovely bottoms (fina dupa is nice arse in polish btw) i nearly crashed in to the 307 that was turning right in to said farm shop.
Oh yeah that was nasty crash Robby K had and hope he is back on track soon.Interesting test of that barrier.

i understand the issue of the armco in this case is that under normal conditions the cars on that side of the road would have been travelling the opposite direction to that which the rally stage was held. hopefully they'll address that for future events...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2SEsag_UHY&fea...

I was at Snetterton years ago for a stages rally. 1 stage was held in reverse and a car left the track hitting the armco at the overlap point for marshalls.I think the driver was killed. Of course there was a very long delay and the event was abandoned. It wasn't hard to work out that the circuit was designed to run clockwise and would be dangerous too run anti-clockwise for the above reason.With hindsight it was obvious but I can't see how it was overlooked at the time, I very much doubt if stages are run on a reverse course now.

I don't think that Armco would appreciate their name being used in this thread. The barrier was made by Roadsafe.

That doesn’t make much sense to me tbh, surely an Armco is designed to stop a crash form any direction of travel? Although i know nothing about construction of armco’s.Also the fact that it made that mess of a normal road car show how dangerous his crash was!
Kubica’s car wasn’t reinforced around the firewall, but the positioning of the engine and gearbox isn’t the same layout as the road car so should have offered up a little more resistance?

Depends where you put it (which part of a corner and the angles etc), and why you're trying to stop the vehicle (a big drop?). There are miles and miles of that armco in place.TankRS said:

they are typically designed to contain a vehicle travelling along the armco and limit how far it can go, like a big metal band - so you have them on the side of the road to stop you going either into oncoming traffic or off the edge of a cliff.each piece overlaps with the next where they are joined together. in the direction of travel, the next piece along should start behind the current one, if that makes sense. so that if you hit one piece and travel along it, the overlap means you don't touch the end of the next piece but you start to touch it a few feet along.
if you go the other direction against the armco, you'll hit the next piece along at the end, and if you've deflected the current piece out of position, you can see that it's totally feasible that the next piece will penetrate the car.
