I was blown away when Jimmy McRae agreed to take me down the rally stage in Colin's ex-works Subaru Legacy.

For a small charity donation I was given MSA approval (and licence) and allowed to go down the stage. It was awesome, a real once in a lifetime chance.

The car was Colin's (1992?) 1000 Lakes car that he rolled before the event and a number of times during!

I said to Jimmy "don't hold back on my part", and at the time of running he went second fastest time of the day.

I was great great fun and I was not scared at all, if fact it made me think, yes it's dangerous, but like any motorsport if you stay on the road (LOL), anyone can give it a go.

The yump was the best part by far.

I was hooting all the way down and hope to have the in car video footage soon.

Here are some snaps;

I was a dream for me, as I was a big Colin fan (as are many of us on here) and I had followed Jimmy's career too.

Believe me I know. This does not happen...

The best previous attempts were a trip around the paddock in John Hanlon's A2 Quattro at rallyday and a chap took me to the starting area in an RS200 at Goodwood a couple of years ago.

So do you just go up and ask if you can have a ride?.

And they either say yes or no? biggrin.

Nice one!

I have been round the rally stage twice, once with Stig Blomqvist in an Audi Quattro s1 evo, and the next year with Bjorn Waldegard!

Simply yes, over time I have got to know John Hanlon and he has allowed me in the car. The RS200 run was a short drive but I love Group B and I had to ask!

I nearly got a spin around the Paddock in the Delta S4 until the chap realised it was not running the stage only the hill, so I was let down.

Just ask! If there is a car there you love, why not ask if they are running to the fuel bay etc. They may let you have a ride.

Yes, it was one to remember.

But I must say meeting Nick and Lewis Hamilton was really cool. They both made time to talk to the crowd.
.
I stupidly said to Lewis "what are you aiming for at Silverstone, 2nd or 3rd?" He came straight back with "we have some good upgrades and I am aiming to win". Good man!

This is what Goodwood is all about.

Getting someone like Lewis to sign his World Drivers Championship Autosport cover.

Nick also added his autograph, which I think is cool.

To me it's priceless.

Jimmy McRae, great driver and a great guy, 4 ~(no, 5) times British champion drove some amazing cars very very quickly; Chevette HSR, Manta 400, 6R4, Sierra Cosworth the list goes on;

this is my favourite clip from the cosworth 3 door rally days on the manx (it was never a great rally car but dont tell him that!)

http://youtu.be/watch?v=HS9mK4HgGbY

some great 6R4 clips here many with Jimmy McRae at full chat including a nice clip from Oulton and Knockill.

this clip is from the group B period at its height, seems very old fashioned now nut just look at how he keeps it on a narrow muddy lane!

Jimmy was champion an amazing 5 times! Surely a record never to be repeated.
