Gallery: BMW And The DTM

As Munich returns to tin-tops, we thought we would indulge in a reminder or two of why that's a good thing...

Looks like the DTM should be spiced up a bit in 2012, with the return of BMW to the top-flight German tin-top series.

The 2012 BMW DTM M3 challenger won't be unveiled until this Friday, but the car has already been doing the rounds at the Oschersleben race circuit (as spotted by German paper, Bild).

So, using the anticipated return of the blue and white roundel to German touring car racing as flimsy excuse, we thought we'd post a few pics of some of our favourite BMW racers, and a spot of random DTM action too. Feel free to join in with your own submissions on the ensuing thread.

But before you look at the pictures, take a moment to enjoy these videos, because they are truly wonderful. Apart from the music. So maybe watch them on mute...

I remember living in South Africa in 1980 and my godfather having a dark blue BMW M1 - he used to pick me up from school in it.....he still has it to this day in New Zealand ---- he was telling me a few years ago that the main BMW dealer in NZ basically threw a blank cheque at him and said write in the amount you want for it!!
He refused but lends it out officially to BMW ---- apart from that one I think I have only ever seen 1 on the road in London, a red one..........so COOL

Those 190Es and E30 M3s are some of the best looking DTM cars ever made.

They look stunning, and much better than most of today's offerings!

I was born too late. I wish I could have been old enough to appreciate these cars when they were in thier prime being driven like they were stolen. Brilliant videos.

Watch the start with the Alfa on the second vid, the whole car basically deforms over the curbs.

/And drifting before drifting was a 'sport'.. hipsters..
