The local press here in Dubai had an article about this and His Royal Deluded said the only reason why it didn't go ahead was they couldn't have the required amount of ambulances at the track as they were too busy mopping up the countrymen he was having shot at the time.

The Gulf Arabs really are a different breed.

I wanted to put stronger comments in when I made the thread, but held back. But since everyone else is wading in...

What a prick. Despite how fked up that country is, someone at the BRDC(?) had the decency to invite him there, no doubt with all expenses paid. Then once he is back home in the motherland he lays in to the whole thing! I hope F1 never returns to Bahrain. I'm very glad 2012 is in doubt, he doesn't deserve the credit and it's hardly popular over there.

Without the BBC pushing the race very little is promoted else where, compared to other circuits, especially based within a city, the billboards, flags & public displays blows ours away. But Hell, you can’t argue with the numbers;

His point that we have a lot going on, so the BGP is less important to us is a fair one, but it says more about his country than what he thinks about ours.

But so what if he puts up posters and flyers and makes a big deal of it? We don't and there were a fking bucket load at Silverstone, what does that tell you about how important our GP is to our us?

I think F1 will be back there next year and a poorer sport for it.

Reading his quote I don't think he's saying the Bahrain GP is bigger than Silverstone. He saying the Bahrain GP to them as Bahrainis is everything, whereas to the UK it's just another sporting event.

Or is it me getting the wrong end of the stick?

the posters and flyers don't make it exciting either.

The GP in Britain is just one major event in a whole raft of Summer sporting extravaganzas. We more or less go from Wimbledon to the GP to the Open - in almost successive weekends.

We are a bit of a sporting mad nation, with millions of people either attending or following all sorts of sports.

Bahrain, from a Western style sporting culture point of view, is still very much behind the "old" world. It may takes decades before they have an enthusiastic, sporting mad population - if ever.
