Watching F1 from another source.

I have a 1.1m multi sat system kicking about, which covers just about everything in the sky above us.
There is lots of coverage of various sports, but the one that interests me, is F1.
It is shown on RTL on the Astra 19.2E satellite in SD, and in HD on TF1 at 9 degrees east.
There are various solutions to get these channels, but the easiest would be a second small dish to either feed a separate receiver, or use a DiSEqC switch to pipe the feed into a sky box as an extra channel.

Interesting. I'd forgotten that I once rented a flat with some other analogue satellite feed. And I did flick to RTL when ITV went to ad breaks.

So is RTL allowed to broadcast its F1 coverage into other territories? Or is it about to lose its licence, too?

If they reduced the signal so far that it couldn't be picked up here with a suitably large dish, then the signal would not be picked up in their local country.

Yes, Sky got reamed for that in the court a year or so back when they tried so sue someone for getting a cheaper European sports channel to watch the Premiership in a pub. It's completely legal. RTL's internet feed works too.

Yep. Not an ideal solution, but not bad if you absolutely have to watch the race live.
The feed RTL transmit, is the same one all the networks transmit.

Personally, I think the current coverage from the beeb is the best ever, and worth waiting for the delayed coverage.

My neighbour has a spare dish and I have a SkyDigibox that I picked up from an old bar somewhere(it's a BSKYB 2400 PACE, it still has a Skydigital card stuck in the front) Can that be made to work on the RTL satellite?

Possibly?
Depends on the firmware loaded on it.
You would need a dish aligned correctly on 19.2E (this is actually the location of the first astra satellites), and then try to load it using the "other channels" function. Have a google for FTA (free to air) satellite boxes. Any one of them will get it.

Yes, the astra 1h signal is very strong. A correctly aligned sky mini dish is enough to receive a good signal.

Many years ago, visiting an uncle in Luxembourg, his rented place has a satellite dish that would pan to different locations where various satellites were. You could choose your input source.

Are these solutions still available?

I used to be able to get the TF1 programme (I'm outside France and UK) but last month they stopped broadcasting the GP feed outside their territory, you just get a black screen 'til it's over.

There is a nice wee app for the iphone for sat finding called Dishloc it uses the camera GPS and compass with an overlay to show where the satelites are there is also an app called DP Maps which is an overlay for Google Earth to give an direction to point your dish. I used Dishloc here in Belgium to get the first alignment for the Freesat HD transmissions, it worked great and I had my system up and running in a few minutes.
