Nice piece of historic BBC footage. Perhaps this uis the style they will return to when they start showing highlights next year?

nice find Eric. Can we cancel the next series of TopGear and recommission Wheelbase please. Listening to the aerofoil controversy was just like the blown diffuser arguments before this yeas British GP - what goes around etc........

Brilliant

Like the bit where the commentator hopes aerodynamics are banned so everyone can focus on 4wd as the future of f1....smile

Can't seem to find part 2 - is there a link?

It was a seminal moment in motorsport - particularly F1. It was that cliff edge point where the governing body COULD have banned downforce generating aerodynamics outright. They had the ammo in the sense that the previous GP had featured a number of high speed accidents caused by the failure of the rear wings of a number of the cars.

In the end, they didn't ban them and just amended the technical regulations to allow different types of wings and wing attachments.
At that moment, four wheel drive was consigned to the bin of F1 history and aerodynamic downforce became the dominant feature it still is today.

Bloody marvellous stuff.

I do love the historical aspect of motorsport, and I love watching and reading about old races and their associated tales of bravery. I also love those almost sepia-toned or B&W images that can instantly transport you to - say - the 1935 German GP or a particular corner on the 1966 Targa.

Unfortunately, these images also sometimes demonstrate how bloody dangerous it was back then.

There is one part of the first clip that amazes and terrifies in equal measures: as the drivers are piling out of Casino Square, that woman on the left with two shopping baskets yikes

An image perfectly "of its time", but alien to modern motorsport.

I'm going to get very little done at work today as a result of them!

Absolutely fantastic series of videos.

Cheers for sharing, awesome videos.

I think we could do with Michael Frostrick to explain the disputes of recent years!

Nice one, Mr Mc.

I like the comment, "Hill's sinister helmet shape"
Was he the first to wear a full face helmet?

Excellent find Eric; I've passed the link on to an old friend who was one of the directors
of that programme (he has zero interest in cars!), he was delighted and surprised that anything from 'Wheelbase' is still extant.

When I first joined the BBC, I tagged along on many a 'Wheelbase' shoot
and great fun they were thumbup.
