Whilst he might been legend behind the wheel it's a shame he took others with him when at the controls of his helicopter.

Very sad. He got it wrong that day and paid the ultimate price. Unfortunately so did three others!

There is something about racing drivers/riders & flying. They seem to crash way too often, Leslie, Hill, Hislop & McRae off the top of my head

Great driver maybe, but on the anniversary in question it seems he was just being a d1ck who killed someone else's kid (among others) while showing off. If he was a 17year old 'chav' in a Clio, he wouldn't get much sympathy.

I can't bridge the gap to some kind of annual commemoration...

Jesus, his own son died in that terrible accident. I'm sure until that last split second he felt in control and wouldn't have dreamt he was endangering his sons life. It was an error of judgement and he paid the ultimate price. Leave the slagging to one side and remember an ability for driving a car that we will rarely see again.

His stupidity killed three other people, maybe murdered is too strong a word, but he shouldn't be celebrated in any way

As far as I've seen there has been no reason why the helicopter went down, the inquiry just seemed to blame Mcrae for flying in the wrong place, rightly or wrongly, no one actually knows what caused the crash still.

There is a element of truth to the statement, that his actions did contribute to the death of himself and the passengers. But all that diedin this tragedy deserve a degree of respect and so do the friends and families.

The report did say that McRae did not have a valid license for that type of aircraft at the time. and concluded that he was flying to low and to fast for the conditions. The report fell short of blaming Mcrae for the crash but i believe there is a second more detailed report coming out by the CAA.
