Fastest Circuit Race

One for the anoraks maybe?
At Lemans, the highest average speed to my knowledge over a race distance was set at 225.228 km/h in 2010 by the Peugeots (faster than the 917's!) and the fastest lap has an average speed of 246.463 km/h.

In F1 I think the 2005 Monza race was the fastest ever race with Montoya averaging 247km/h over the race distance. The lap record is from a year earlier at 257.32km/h

Over at Indy the fastest average speed for the 500 is 299.307 km/h, (Arie Luyendyk in 1990) and the fastest lap 379.971 km/h, (Eddie Cheever in 1996)

Maybe separating the ovals out for separate comment, but have there been any faster laps or races than those above?

Gil de Ferran's Fontana qualifying lap in 2000 was 388.537 km/h. I believe that still stands as the closed course lap record. There's a video on YouTube - it sounds like a low-flying jet. Absolutely astounding, that guy was so special on ovals and at a time when a Champ Car was still something amazing as well.

Dario Franchitti talked about that in his MotorSport Podcast....blacking out in the turns, wheelspin in 6th gear etc.
