Bahrain 2012 - NO!

I love F1 racing and all that goes with it and I'm not political in anyway but I was appalled to hear via the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-15105270) that friends of Bernie in Bahrain have jailed for up to 15 years medical staff who treated injured people in the recent uprising
I don't know the full merits or otherwise of the uprising but any injured person should be treated and those who administer the treatment should be able to do so without fear of reprisal
If these reports are fully substantiated then we should all lobby the F1 community stop the 2012 race, if we allow it to go ahead then we are complicit in the actions of the states rulers
Maybe Bernie should be the first one to step forward but I doubt this will happen so what can be done?
There must be many users on PH who are connected to F1 so can we start a campaign here that has real teeth?

Lobby whoever you like, you could get millions on board and they still wouldn't give a monkeys. It's a purely financial decision that put it there in the first place, and a purely financial decisions which has kept it going back. You can have one hell of a voice, but money will always shout louder than you in this game.

anyway, wasn't it that the race was approved by some party (possibly the FIA) and then another party (WMSC?) said that they had the power to remove the race from the calendar? might be completely wrong, but i'm pretty sure that even tho bernie has said yes, it's not necessarily a done deal.

Why. It's no different to other countries. What about china, Korea, India. These don't have a perfect record when it comes to human rights, but because the news is censored it's ok to race there.
China and India have at leat as much access to the internet and worldwide media as Bahrain and in recent years have made a big effort to act reasonably. Bahrain has done the opposite.IMO its the teams and the sponsors that people should lobby not the FIA. But Going to Bahrain next year shows the authorities there that they can abuse peoples rights and not suffer sanctions or real economic and pr consequences

So the Chinese government is ok to continue to destroy farming villages and homes to make way for an expanding city. Just like they did in the run up to the Beijing Olympics. But that's ok because it's not in the western news. I have friends at work who have lost family members in china as the authorities have shot them as they refused to leave there family homes and farm land that has been in the family for over 100 years. IMO its the teams and the sponsors that people should lobby not the FIA. If loads of people started writing to the team sponsors and stated how their logos being seen in Bahrain effect what you thought of them as they'd be associating themselves with an oppressive regime, then something *might* happen.
It would take more than a couple of e-mails, but if enough noise was made, then the sponsors would have to act and even Bernie can't take them on comfortably.

But glad that the biggest and most wasteful long term public scrounger ie one BBC has had the financial lead pulled good and hard, get in there sky and run it as economical as poss just show the parts we want to see.

It would need somebody or more with some very good connections who was prepared to start a petition and have it placed on various motoring forums tomaybe start to have some effect, but as has been said before in the end it is all about money.
If the drivers had any ball and stuck together they could do something to not drive there, but I very much doubt that they will do anything.
