NASCAR WTF moment

I'm watching some NASCAR sprint cup malarky right now. They just had an in car with Jamie Johnson, he looked like he was so close to the steering wheel it made him look like a thalidomide victim, and he had some sort of umbilical cord sticking out of the top of his lid. Madness I tell you.

Big ol yank tank + slick tyres + no power steering?

I believe it gives better leverage sitting so close, BTCC drivers used to sit in a similar position I seem to recall.
