Petrol v Diesel

Just purchased a 1.6 Focus Zetec, need an estate for the dogs and the car is absolutely spot on. For 2006 car the condition is literally as new.
This is replacing an elderly slightly scabby Passat estate 1.9 115 version.
Now on paper the difference in mpg isn't great. Not that i expect the same from petrol as diesel.
Average on the commute for the Passat is high 50's mpg, generally near 60.
(Slow warm up then steady dual carriageway).
Now the Focus, which is hugely slower i've managed 34.8mpg.
Ok the insurance is near half the price as is the tax but, truly amazed how bad the Focus is.
It's the 100hp version. Is this to be expected or do i need to change my driving style?
Seen some alleged huge improvement with a chip, no more power but increases in driveability and economy.
Worth a bash or is this typical of a modern 'economical' petrol car?

Yes the torque is missing. I've forgotten about changing down for any reason except stall revs.
Still shocked by the peas poor mpg though. I though given the gentle commute it would manage mid 40s.
Last long owned petrol i owned was a Volvo S40 2.0T and got high 30's. Last toy petrol was a T5 which got high 20s so not a huge difference for 240hp to 100!
