I like to think it is down to the simple fact that Alonso and Hamilton are probably the most rawly talented true racers out there. And they know it and respect each other for this reason.

Everyone goes through a rough patch at some point. Hamilton's had a rough patch this year but will eventually get back to his normally excellent form. Alonso went through a rough patch in 2007 but bounced back after he left McLaren. I think they understand each other more than anyone else on the grid.

Normally excellent form??? The guy who threw away his chances of being rookie world champ with inconsistency, and nearly threw away his WDC season with inconsistency??? To me, he has never had a consistent year, let alone excellent.Drivers only say such things whern there is something to gain from it.
There is little doubt that both are naturally gifted drivers, probably more so than any others out there. However, as with any driver, they have their faults, or weaknesses I suppose you call them.
The question to ask is what Alonso gets out of such a statement. Firstly, it is not to show a united front with Massa. I reckon Alonso might be wanting a less talented, or perhaps less keen, team mate next season. It worked for MSc.

Hamilton has had a bad year, but at least he is man enough to 'fess-up'. He is maturing well this year, lets see how he gets on next year. Interesting that in a 'bad' season he has still won 2 races and is in the championship top 5.

I'm not sure it is that strange, people will call me naive but I take all that at face value. Sometimes even racing drivers can speak their true thoughts, even though they might be couched in other terms (as already said, it's a dig at the rest of the field).
