"I would do no worse than Webber"
Discussion
This is the opinion of Jean-Eric Vergne which - even though Mark hasn't had the best of seasons - is quite a big claim in my opinion!.
Red Bull young driver Jean-Eric Vergne has said that he "would do no worse than [Mark] Webber" if he was given a race seat.
Vergne topped the timesheets in all three sessions of the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi as he tested the RB7 for the first time. With Red Bull looking at which young driver will eventually replace Webber when he retires, Vergne's immediate target would appear to be a seat with Toro Rosso. However, with Jaime Alguersuari, Sebastien Buemi and Daniel Ricciardo all competing for the same seat, Vergne believes he has shown enough to already be in position to replace Webber.
"When I came back (from the test) I saw the comments of (engineering boss) Ian Morgan and they were very positive, I cannot hide it," Vergne is quoted by Le Nouvel Observateur. "I know that the top teams are cautious of young drivers; the only one (McLaren) that dared to go with a young guy recently was Hamilton, and it worked.
"We have had a similar preparation; I did three days of testing and physically had no problems. So I think if I was put in the Red Bull, I would do no worse than Webber."
Vergne does admit, however, that he needs to impress in FP1 in Brazil to put himself in the best possible position for 2012.
"That's my impression, anyway, after these tests. But I know that the road is still long and where I go next is Brazil. This is my last practice session with Toro Rosso before I know what I will be doing next season."

Yes, except Vettel spent a couple of years at Sauber and Toro Rosso. I can't think of any other new drivers recently apart from Hamilton who were dropped straight into a seat at one of the top teams.
And nearly half a season at BMW Sauber. Also Red Bull weren't exactly a 'top team' before 2009, if I recall Torro Rosso beat Red Bull in the constructors in Seb's last year with them. Big headed Frog w@nker.
Although I am prepared to accept ( & hope to find ) he has been misquoted
Apart from Prost (& having just watched the Senna movie this week I really don't want to discuss him ), how have Les Blues done in the last few decades? Panis ? 1 (inherited due everyone else's bad luck ) win and. . . . . . Er ? not a lot. Grosjean ? we will see if he is gifted a second chance due Kubicas misfortune. Alesi ? loved to watch him, but . . . . . results ? the Joe 90 lookalike Indy Car champ (Hell, I can't even remember his name, such is the impression he made)
If this jumped up little Newbie reckons he is able to race with the aggression & tenacity that Mark has shown this year (but jeezuz ! where were the results Man ? ) he certainly has the cock-sure attitude required.
Talking the talk is easy (especially for a Frog ! ) Walking the walk may prove to be a little beyond him. Try the outside of Eau Rouge for starters mon ami.
Oh BTW, I lived in France for 13yrs, but this "attitude" sometimes reminds me why it wasn't 14. . . . .

I would like to see Redbull take a chance with him. I think over the past couple of seasons Webber hasn't come up with the goods to keep his seat secure. Vergne would have to really impress before they could justify giving him the seat over Alguersuari though. I don't know much about Ricciardo and I think Buemi has had enough time to shine but isn't consistently performing better enough than Alguersuari to show he is a future star.

A World Cup win, made the final of another and two European Cups, three-time Rugby World Cup finalists, that's not bad. (meant to be a joke)the other me said:

Not joking here, despite the fact he was running third and a minute behind Hill when Hill's engine blew and 1/2 a minute behind Alesi when Alesi's hydraulic's/gearbox packed up, Panis's '96 Monaco GP win was a good win. He started 13th and worked his way up to third and deserved a victory, despite it being inherited. In '97, if it wasn't for his own misfortune, I think he could of won Argentina and, looking at how the season turned out, could've won at least another race and finished 2nd in the title. Then again, even if that happened, French drivers still wouldn't have done much, so fair enough.the other me said:

Took you 13 years to get tired of it? the other me said:

First of all, I hope he hasn't been misquoted. I have followed his career so far and I have been very impressed. He is a driver that I have tipped for the future before on these forums. You seem to have a pathetically bigotted view of the french for whatever reason. I suggest you get over yourself.

The Senna film was edited down from a 10 hour film. if I recall correctly, the 5 hour version had audiences leaving the test screenings thinking that Prost was an angel and Senna was not a nice person. It was edited down again and again until the version you saw was released. If you are basing your views on a driver solely on a film that is centred around his bitter rival, then I suggest you are more than a bit thick and should do some real research in to the man.

Life Saab Itch, call it bigoted if you will, me I just call it "keen observation of the human race" (race by race)
If you had lived 13 yrs amongst them you would perhaps appreciate that the good points ( & yes there are many ) are sometimes nullified when they open their mouth & spout out this conceited cocky stuff. Modesty is NOT the strong point of the race.
As to basing my judgement of Prost on 1 x 100min film, you are joking right ?
I have been an avid F1 fan since 1970 & think I have enough knowledge of the history of the sport to realise what political & treacherous goings- on took place in the Balestre era. . . . why was the pole position moved in 1990 ? why was Senna penalised in 89 ?
They (Senna & Prost) may indeed have buried the hatchet, beginning during 1992 when it was reported that Prost spent all his time on the phone to Senna, & continuing in 94 when Senna warmly welcomed Alain back in his role as commentator, & tacitly admitted that he missed the ONE rivalry that meant anything to him.
However, that doesn't mean one has to like Prost, even whilst admitting that Senna had his own demonic side, albeit slightly more upfront than Prost colluding with his countryman to manipulate Senna championship 2 years in a row.
I am entitled to my bigoted view of a race I spent 13years with, it is for you "to get over it" not me IMHO.

To be fair to this French chappy; he (and I) have won just as many F1 races in the past 15 months as Webber has, namely zero. Unlike his young upstart German team-mate with (I think) 14 victories in the same period and in demonstrably the same car.
I think if I was an ambitious junior driver in that organisation, then I would be making the same sort of noises.

Has he looked at the age of the bloke in the number 1 car this year at all?
Also McLaren didn't just take a punt on a young driver who looked good in a test, Hamilton had been groomed for that drive for years. Has he looked at the age of the bloke in the number 1 car this year at all?

I always had a soft-spot for a certain Monsieur Tambay (several wins @ Ferrari IIRC).Just a pity things went downhill for him after that: Renault, Force (or should the o have been an a

So that does suggest you formed a major opinion based on seeing the film, otherwise, why did you mention it in such a way?As to the Pole position being moved in 1990, they didnt! Senna wanted it moving as he considered it to be less advantageous that it should have been, but it didnt move at all, it was always going to be from that spot and the drivers knew that at the start of qualifying. Senna should have qualified 2nd if he knew it would mean he would lose a spot as a result of it being there.
As to 89, he was disqualified because he recieved outside assistance, that wasn't allowed at the time.
