1980 F1 Cars

Just watched the 1980 British GP from Brands on ESPN Classic the cars still look really fast but its hard to compare lap times as the track has changed (not loads I know) but I was wondering how fast they are would there lap times compare with modern F3 or faster like GP2?

Pironis pole time was a 1.11 dead. That compares with this years f 2 pole of 1.16.1. Think the track is more or less the same, maybe dingle del part is now a bit quicker?

Graham Hill bend is now slower, the GP circuit is actually a little quicker now, but overall there's not much change in the length/speed of the circuit.

But the cars' speed has changed. A modern F1 car should be able to lap the GP circuit in under a minute. Which is scary !

Faster then some can go round the Indy circuit

The indy circuit lap record is just ridiculous! Pretty much 38 dead.

This year Historic F1 visited Brands Hatch which features cars from the 3.0L era - 1966-1984. The pole time was by Hideki Yamauchi who is a promising up-and-coming Japanese F3 driver at 1.19. If a current F2 car can lap at 1.16 then probably a current F2 car is a fraction quicker than a 1980 Grand Prix car. For context, Andy Meyrick in the Group C Spice SE89 gpt down into the 1.17s that weekend.

Around Barcelona an F1 car is about 17per cent faster than F2. So, that means a 62 second lap for a modern F1 car at Brands. I'd love to see that.....
