One of the most important people in F1 is finally retiring.

Professor Sid Watkins has retired from his role as president of the FIA Institute.

The former Formula 1 doctor was made president of the organisation when it was formed, but has stepped down in favour of former deputy president Gerard Saillant. Garry Connelly takes on Saillant's old position.

Watkins will remain involved with the institute as honorary president.

"It has been an honour and a great pleasure to lead the Institute since its establishment," said Watkins.

"I am very proud of our achievements and our plans for the future, both in terms of motorsport safety and sustainability.

"I look forward to continue making a modest contribution to these in my new capacity as honorary president."

Prof. Watkins has been instrumental in making F1 as safe as it is today, I imagine there are plenty of drivers around the world that owe their lives to his work.

A great loss to the Motorsport world, but he has deserved him. Because of his actions and input there has not been a death in F1 for 17 years.

He retired from his F1 role a few years back but carried on with the FIA job.

I hadn't realised he had a book so will check that out now!

Two books. Get them both. Search for Life at the Limit,and Beyond the Limit. That should pick it up.

A stunning career, and saved several lives at the side of a race track. I agree Sir Sid would be appropriate.
