Can't see another topic on this, so apologies if a pearoast.

Another overtaking rule has been added to Formula 1's regulations for the 2012 season.

Last month the FIA flagged the forthcoming rule by announcing that drivers "may no longer move back on to the racing line having moved off it to defend a position".

The rule has until now been an unwritten one that was agreed to and understood by the drivers, with the stewards empowered to issue penalties for questionable manoeuvres but from 2012 a regulation will declare: "More than one change of direction to defend a position is not permitted.

"Any driver moving back towards the racing line, having earlier defended his position off-line, should leave at least one car width between his own car and the edge of the track on the approach to the corner."

as usual with the FIA rules, they dont clarify anything.
Do you chance an overtake, or just sit behind them and ask the stewards to measure the gap?
If the gap isnt enough, do they have to let you pass? penalty?
if the gap wasnt enough, but you didnt have the speed/space to overtake anyhow, is a penalty still given??
Where, exactly is the edge of the track? At times its clear- the concrete wall. But other times it isnt- pit exit, for example. And is it the edge of the tarmac, inside edge of white line, outside edge of white line? What about chicanes, where the accepted line is over them, technically off the track...

Right now massa and hamilton are conference calling each other to try and work out what this means for their crashes in 2012...

Sounds a bit daft to me.. the existing rule worked aslong as the drivers didn't take the piss and the stewards used some common sense. That one just reads like a minefield of ambiguity to me.

Does all this "Drivers only allowed one move" stuff only apply to F1? In other championships it never gets a mention. confused

I can see what there doing but as others have said I think it's going to be hard to enforce... And I think just like the team orders rule, if they can't enforce the rule fairly then they should do away with the rule alltogether.

Perhaps they sould build F1 cars like touring cars... if drivers want to play rough.

They have got tougher to take a bit more wheel banging. Not sure if you'd get away with a Schumacker punting D Hill type incident. But I understood that since then the suspension has got stronger to cope with more wheel bashing.

Are you sure - I seem to remember a CaterLotusHam car exploding all on it's own on a straight road last year.

This is going to make some interesting lines going into, and through corners. The guy defending will be breaking earlier, but could simply end up spearing the car on the outside. Going to make for some interesting moves. Either that or people will simply take a very early inside line, and their defensive line will be to the outside before a corner... Who knows. Very ambiguous, and odd rule to really fasten down.

It was on one of the build up features they do. They went to the factory and made a wishbone and mentioned it was designed not just to do it job, but after failing to finish races from a bit of argy bargy snapping them, they also design that in as well now. (The old to finish first, first you must finish idea) Might have been McLaren or Williams they were talking to.

Does F1 really need "overtaking rules"?

Because, for me, such rules would preclude battles like this:

Villeneuve vs Arnoux

I mean, it's racing not an organised WI coffee morning.

Where was the swerving off and back into the racing line in that video that this rule would stop?

The reason that was a great battle was because they both raced completely fairly, and had total trust in each other. They both left fair space, a little bit of wheel banging but nothing intentionally malicious. I don't see anything in the rules that would stop drivers racing like this now. The rule is specifically about those leaving the racing line to block the inside line, then returning to the racing line, done in such a way with is basically a swerving intentional block. Arnoux and Gilles didn't do that at all, which was one of the reasons their battle was so great.

All its doing is making a rule that already exists a bit more explicit and easier for stewards to judge.

+1. Nothing in that video was be affected in the slightest by the proposed rule.

What's preventing battles like the one in the video is not "overtaking rules" rather it's the relentless dependancy on aero for grip.

Indeed. That's now I read it too.
