I am doing a bit of basic research and would be interested to know your top 5 names in motorsport. I am talking about racecar manufacturers past and present. If you can put your top 5 down before looking at everyone else's replies it would give me a more accurate picture.

I suppose I am trying to get to the top 5 that you think have greatest recognition or awareness in the world at large. To some extent that is likely to be linked to success, but also to status and brand awareness.
What has "brand" awareness got to do with most racing teams. The only curently racing teams that have engaged in serious road car production are Lotus, Ferrari and Mercedes. Even Porsche and Peugeot have pulled out of competion to a large extent.. McLaren have only built a tiny handful of road going cars. Most racing teams are specialist manufacturers who exist solely for racing and their "brand" has no commercial value beyond the narrow world of motor sport competition.
It was very different in the old days when most racing teams were offshoots of road car manufacturers - pre-war and 50s Mercedes, Auto Union, Alfa Romeo, Talbot, Bugatti etc.
The arrival of the British "gragistes" changed how racing teams were perceived.

Well, I think Ferrari, Porsche and Ford are pretty solid top fivers so long as you're talking post-war.Rude-boy said:

Well I could say that about Alfa and Mercedes who dominated F1 and others classes for quite some time. They were also driven by some of the greatest, and in Fangio, maybe the greatest, drivers of all time. MrKipling43 said:

Granted.Lotus would also be high up there.
Were the question asked in 1992 I would have said Brabham would also have been there.
Tyrrell?
It's also a question that would get a different answer from a bobble hat compared to J. Bloggs I would have said, although less so in the last 20 years.
