Rally Damage Who pays?

It's one of those things that happens. Sometimes a corner catches a few drivers out. And they hit a wall/fence/hedge. See example:

Obviously competitors fix their own car damage. But how is the tab for the wall sorted out?

In the UK, the MSA has insurance which usually covers things like this. (Except on circuits where you have to pay for any damage!). I am rallying at Cadwell in a month and the entry form states that entrants pay for damage.

I know it's different but many years ago on a night rally my dad hit a stone gate post. Ended up repairing himself. Got 3 points and a hefty repair bill for the car. Ended his rallying there and then I seem to remember.

I would imagine on an organised sanctioned event it would be down to the organisers.

On a lighter note a mate once stuffed his car through a hedge damaging a farmers fence. Got his car out. Next day policeman at his door with a disintergrated number plate the farmer had pieced back together. Went and repaired it and now has a career in fencing and landscaping.

I see. Well that makes sense to do it centrally. Costed into the entry fee I guess then.

It will come from a "global damages" pot which will be filled by part of the licence renewal fee and potentially part of the entry too. Taken from the regs: "Any competitor causing damage to third party property will be liable
for the total cost of rectification of any such damage. Where such damage is covered by the MSA insurance policy, the competitor will be liable for the policy excess, currently £350."

Last time I marshalled on a closed road stage rally a judge of fact report was required if a marshall saw a car cause damage so that the competitor could be charged for it.

I hope Jari Matti Latvala doesn't have to pay for the damage to his cars....he must be skint!!!!

I imagine his excess has increased somewhat. I wouldn't underwrite him!

At the end of every event the drivers have to sign a 'damage declaration form' which details any unscheduled trips into or through the scenery, you should provide a map reference too (at least you should on a road rally). The club can then go back and sort it themselves with the land owner or go through the blanket MSA insurance which is mandatory in the UK.

When I was involved in organising Road Rallies we has an 'arrangement' with a local farm suppliers - Any damage was repaired by us as sson as possible and reclaimed (if possible) from the competitor.

Meant we kept a good relationship with the very people we needed to to allow us to carry on using 'their' neighbourhoods.
