There are loads of options.
These, for example, are way cheaper: http://www.simxperience.com/
Or, you can spend much much more than £16k!

Its not always possible to get a race license, medical conditions for example.
Or money, or time. It's a different hobby. With sim racing you can drive any car on any track with people all over the world, or on your own against computer opponents. There's a really good community behind it, and it's great for those 30 minutes of downtime between other things.
Plus, it's not exclusive, there's no reason you can't do both

Thats very clever....Love the working speedo/tacho

I love racing online on GT5 with a Logitech G25. It wasn't too expensive and the quality of the feedback is excellent. I'd go as far as saying that it gives me some of the thrill i get from actually racing. I also think that working hard at something like time trials - trying to squeeze more time out of a car - is good practice for the real thing.
It's still seen as a "geek" thing when i tell people about it though.

Has anyone seen the video of the racing seat one guy built in his garage/home cinema? From memory it was a steering wheel/flight yoke and pedals which was built onto a collapsible frame which actually folded down into a void in the floor.
When not in use the floor was flat and the room was a home cinema. A press of a button saw a car seat and steering wheel setup rise on hydraulic rams out of the floor and into position. You could switch between car and aircraft controllers depending on what game you were playing. It looked awesome but I can't find the video anywhere. If anyone has the link or photos please share them!!

Awesome. Surely you'd have to be an engineering genius otherwise it would make you sick? And at the higher end of the sim scale!

yes its made of wood and isn't the prettiest thing but its got no wobble and cos its so stiff the force feedback from the wheel vibrates through the frame making it feel like you are going over curbs! Lol
