Data logging - options ?

Hi chaps

I do a bit of race instruction these days - just for fun ( though sometimes it's terrifying ).

I've always used Stack & PI data logging systems, but these are expensive for a newbie or not really easily setup on a track/road car.

Race logic do a VBox lite system that looks pretty good for the money.
The essential elements is that I like to be able to do track overlays and compare laps.

Any suggests or feedback on the RaceLogic system

(can't actually say that I'm massively interested in the video element - but perhaps it's a good tool to also have)

It's easier with video to show....slow learners what they are doing wrong.


I've used racelogic kit before. It's good, the software is great once you've got all your parameters set up, but can take a while to do this for a new circuit. The box itself is easy to wire up etc. All in all a good bit of kit for the money.


I'd advise against linking it to their dash though. You can't see the black on white screen in sunlight.

we use the race technologgy dl1 linked to a hero cam using their video sync.

I find it works really well to reinforce what you are telling people.

especially with business types. you can tell them till you are blue in the face, but show them once on the data or video and they believe you...

quite funny when they insist they were flat, and hit the apex spot on, and the data shows they were on the brakes in the middle of the circuit...

We use the racelogic system and its really very good, just had the latest upgrade and now you just pop a chip in and it sorts the circuits out for you, what with the auto-start and auto-stop its just a doddle to use. The video is used for lines, the data is used for everything else. Also i know they are working on some clever engine data imports from the ECU, this is already done for a number of car types but motorpsort ecus are done as one-offs, Oh and we use the video for upload to youtube and the TV production company.
Quality is very good.

I use a VBox micro at work sometimes which sounds right up your street, easy to set up and view data, plus it give you the option of logging CAN too to get throttle revs brake steering inputs etc.


But, a video probably is better for amateurs, some racing drivers can't useful read telemetry so I doubt amateurs will get much from it.

I think the micro is the one I'm going to look at.

Had a videoVBox lite for a year or so now and went on there training day today. Excellent bit of kit and easy to compare laps, lines braking points between an instructor driving and the client. Quick and easy to get the data and see where the differences are.

Support is excellent too
