What is the consensus of opinion guys....

The Griffy 400 is getting closer... I have 2 choices of Diff I can Run..

Original re-built Salisbury 4HU Powerlock with correctly set up ramp angles....

Or.

Salisbury 4HU fitted with a Quaife ATB.

Has anyone got experience of both and how they differ in the real world on track.. Pro's and cons seem to hinge around traction if the inside wheel becomes unloaded with the ATB !!

Bear in mind also the novice behind the wheel !!...How easy are they to live with.

All I can add to this Neil, is that Quaife advised me not to use an ATB if there was any chance of unloading a rear wheel. As the Taz did unload the rear wheels, on certain bends, I went for the Powerloc option, which worked very well. Reidy set the Powerloc up to suit the Taz rather than a 2 tonne Jag.

Reidy is building a 3.54 at the mo but after thinking I had just an open diff in the car I took the diff out and removed the back plate to find a brand new ATB in the existing diff case..

I have a feeling the ATB may be a bit easier for a novice to handle at the expense of traction on very tight bends so really I am a bit torn as to which one to use...Considering my twitchy ringpiece in a 300hp SWB car probably using any 3 diffs including an open one won't really make that much difference!!

Can't comment about the ATB but I really didn't have any dramas with the Powerloc and found it really easy to handle. Didn't feel that it was pushing the car into understeer. A lot easier than the open diff I used to have.

Neil,
I've got a spare rebuilt 3.54 LSD set up for an 880 kilo car?

I've run both in the taz a stock jag powerlock unit, which was a nightmare, an open diff and then the atb.

The powerlock wasnt modified so ruined the handling, moving to an open diff which was too high a ratio( geared my 160 bhp taz for about 160!) we went from mid pack to winning and lap records.

But still suffered from spinning up the inside rear. Replaced that with an atb and sooo much better.

So either a power locker that's specifically setup for the power and weight of the car or a stock atb. Would be my call

Neil, just bought a R500 caterham with IRS and it has an ATB diff fitted.

There's a thread on the caterham page that covers what diffs (worth reading all of it as lots of rumour with good explanations towards end of thread).

Very impressed with traction, not had all power spinning away through one wheel, perhaps as both wheels have remained on the black stuff??

Ring road and race transmissions or SPComponents for impartial advice or ring quaife for their considered opinion?

You like to fly across the kerbs??

Like the idea that the ATB has no plates to wear like many other LSD units. Rumour of lifetime warranty??

Good luck with your decision.

For what it's worth the LSD in my old Tuscan (Andy R's) wasn't lairy or understeer inducing.

Hi Neil, we run an ATB diff in the Griff and it handles fine! Not had any drama with just one wheel spinning - they either both do or just grips and goes! Dad did have a Tuscan style cone diff in first and didn't like it at all - induced understeer all of the time! Swapped the diff and problem solved.

If I ever get it wired up!!

Hopefully very soon. Certainly it will be out to be shaken down..Whether it races this year or just gets a few outings for my learning requirements I am not sure.

Car is very close to fire up though.

Only brake lines to run , wiring loom which is in the hands of Mr Reid and a few loose ends to tidy up.
