The deal is done, according to this report in El Confidencial (it's in Spanish, I'm afraid).

Mark will stay for a year before retiring or moving somewhere else, at which time Perez will take the 2nd seat.

It sounds plausible to me.

Just sounds all wrong to me , my bet is that they would want Perez in the car next week not in 2 years

I think its quite plausible to say that Webber will move on at the end of this season. In my head, Ricciardo would take his place at Red Bull. The trouble with that is, I think DR is shaping up as a #1 driver and I would hate to see his first drive at a top team wasted as a #2. I havent yet worked out how and he and Red Bull will reconcile this, as I cant see them wanting to let Seb go or give them both top billing in the top team.

But as a long term investment, I'd like to see them develop Ricciardo. Unfortunately there is a ceiling shaped like Vettel at Red Bull, for now.

But it seemed a natural progression, once its been reported that he's off.

Dammit, arrived early again.

Vettel to Mercedes in 2014 was as good as done I thought, which would be about right if Red Bull wanted Ricciardo in as their #1; a season as an understudy would show him the ropes. This should hopefully set in train the merry-go-round which we've been waiting for, with lots of people swapping.

It's the allure of those red cars; everyone wants to drive one in a race, even if you are plodding along at the back.

I would have bet against Webber going to Ferrari although I can see the benefits from both points of view. MW has shown himself to be happy as a #2, an essential with Alonso.

"Mark, you are faster than Fernando. Slow down."

"Yup."

I would assume that he has lots of insider knowledge that would be of use to Ferrari. Mind you, so would anyone in HRT at the moment.

For someone about to retire the lure of the $ is very strong. Further, it would be a challenge for him, so a positive there.

Reasons against it would be the fact that he must be comfortable in RB. It is one thing to go elsewhere to spark a career boost but next season will probably be his last. The pay can't be bad and not that much less than Ferrari will pay a #2.

If he goes then good lunk to him. He'll need it. The team is built around Alonso and he'll have to get used to the car, the systems and personel before getting the best out of the team.

He's rich. Is the allure of a bit more money enough?

Can't think of any reason why it wouldn't be Perez straight in at the end of this year tbh,

Do any established top drivers in top teams ever switch sides with money as the main motivation? I don't think it's particularly fair to assume that just because they're aid well, that's what motivated them.

My thinking is that he'll stay at RB for as long as they want him, then he'll seek out the next best drive. I don't really think Ferrari need an old timer, they'd be much better suited getting Perez in sooner rather than later.

I don't think he's thinking about retirement just yet, but then neither were Barrichello or Trulli.

The question is, where does this leave Massa? Indycar?

Could be anywhere - but Indycar or Nascar makes sense as it's in similar time zones to Brazil.

Who cares where Massa goes. Personally I'd like to see him gone before the next race & get someone half decent in the car.

If Webber goes to Ferrari next year that is a good move for him I think. As for Perez - I guess it depends upon his contract expiry date at Sauber.

Are you assuming Ferrari will pay more than Red Bull. Why go to a lesser team especially when you'll still get beaten by the guy in the next door garage?

I don't think that Webber is motivated by money. No guarantee that Red Bull will be front runners next year so if he isn't wanted at Red Bull where better to go than Marenello?

I don't think he needs to give RB any more reasons to not renew his contract - it's not like they haven't got the resources to replace him. They've got a whole other F1 team that at the moment is specifically tasked with finding and developing HIS replacement.

But to be fair to both RB and MW - so long as he's comparable to SV in terms of speed and results - i think he'll stay.

Out of interest, where did you get that information from? It is well known that Seb is a product of Marko and has very close ties with him. More likely that Mercedes would target Hamilton right now before he renews his contract, but if your information is credible, it also suggests that Hamilton must have rebutted their approach.

As to Ricciardo....way too early to speculate on him. He could be spat out after a couple of seasons with STR.

If the Webber news is true, that's a huge surprise. I find it hard to believe that Perez and his money will not be in that second Ferrari seat next season.

I could see Alonso and Webber working well together to be honest. And if Webber only does a year at Ferrari and then retires I can see him either going into a consultancy role, or more likely going back home and possibly entering V8 Supercars. That way he gets to race and do what he loves, but has more time to do the other stuff he enjoys as well.
