Hidden Tuscans for sale!!
Discussion
As a few of you are aware i have registered to race in the last few rounds of this years challenge
[ dependant on my back] and aim to run the full series next year! Hope to be a worthwhile addition and fulfil a lifetime ambition!
I have spent the last 6 to 8 months looking at various car's and working out where i would like to enter the series RV8,AJP etc, but one thing has puzzled me?? Where are all the Tuscans? When i look at the old pictures of big grids lined up its hard to see where all these cars have gone?
I know a select few are sitting on a large proportion and there is the usual collateral damage due to write offs and race car's being converted but i still find it hard to make the numbers add up?
The hardest thing has been trying to find a car that needs significant work for the right money that i could build up to my spec as i have done with my road Griff
Thanks must go to Andy race & Perry who have given me invaluable advice and had to endure annoying phone calls at funny hours!
Aiming to make a decision in the coming week so if anyone out there has something they want to put on the table i'm all
Look forward to getting to know you all

Are....the ellusive search for the "cheap" tuscan.
I believe there's three parked up behind the Holy Grail, in Shagri-la, next to Sheerga's Paddock. Ask Lord Lucan, he's seen them.

I cannot see mention of the word cheap in my post Mr Race!! But if i was looking for a cheap one i would know not to come knocking on your door I believe there's three parked up behind the Holy Grail, in Shagri-la, next to Sheerga's Paddock. Ask Lord Lucan, he's seen them.

Cheap is also a relative term depending on who you talk to! often confused with value 4 money! Has that check bounced yet????
Is Shagri-la the porn version of Shangrilar if so i'm sure i would of been there and seen said Tuscans long ago

Remember my words young Padwan...

the most expensive Tuscan, is the "requiring recommissioning" Tuscan.
especially to someone like yourself, who likes everything...gorgeous.
Fast and Cheap...thats what you want, fast and cheap.
Spend ya money racing not building!

There are loads of Tuscans knocking about. Trouble is, Perry and Daz own them all
There probably arnt that many missing 50-60 built
pery, daz, reidy must have about 15 between them

7 converted to sagaris
1 part converted to sag ( cough)
12 racing
at least 5 in australia
another 3 in the usa
another 5 I know of not being used
doesnt leave many if a few have been destroyed..
I've got a chassis / rollcage / wishbones in my pile of "one day in the future" project parts. And the chap I got it from had a complete racer in bits in his garage , over Towcester way if I remember correctly. He had brought a second car to replace the body work on his after a big crash and had no use for the chassis. Mine is medium blue with two helmet humps on the rollcage so may have been a two seater at some stage.
Was the thorpedo car built on a tuscan Chassis ? went and had a look at that when it was up for sale , could of had it for 10K , kicking my self for not buying it.
Cheers
Geoff.

The best thing about earning "ya own money" is getting to do what you want not what everyone else tells you

Amazing how many people had an opinion on how i should build the Griffith thank god i did it my way!
Although i see the good philosophy behind your sound advice can't help but feel a man race car is a representation of himself and as such
i'm not to enamoured with the idea of racing someone else baby just for the sake of racing!
Plus in life the journey is often the best bit and once your there its kinda all over.
Guess i come more from the school of thought do it once! Do it right! or don't bother doing it at all!
Horses for courses and all that crap, but i guess budget does play a big part in peoples choice in series, class and car.
Out of interest if money was not a factor i wonder if cheap and fast would still be your preferred route? Me thinks you and Perry would be battling it out for who can spend the most on a Tuscan Racer

absolutly right dude.
Finacially, fast and cheap, go racing.
For the journey (and I'd suggest) your way, the car doesn't exist so build it your way.
Race what you love. It'll cost you more than you want, will cause you pain you won't beleive, but if its the one you wanted, the one for you, it's money well spent.
You really have no idea how much money you will be spending...just remember that race cars win nothing for being the prettiest, the most expensive or the cleanest. First past the post is what its about. "Looks lovely mate, shame its never won anything" makes a race car worth...ZIP and takes the shine off a very nice car.
You'll do your own thing, ofcourse dude. But look at the history books...fast and cheap, the most expensive car doesn't always win! I know you aint scared of spending, if anything I'm suggesting you spend less.

Having bought the ultimate 'fixer upper' I tend to agree with both of you. On the one hand I am really an advocate of 'do it right, do it once', and would (if I could) build mine into something similar to Carl Hansen's Tuscan first time. Having spent time trying to do that though, it can be a real struggle to get things done in the race car world, much moreso than the road car world for some reason? And I've since changed my tune a bit, and would now happily keep things a little simpler in order to get the thing on track - it really isn't fun watching everyone else race, knowing I have a car but can't drive it! I will still try and build mine into my perfect racer, but I think I would prefer to upgrade a running race car than try to build it perfect first time!
Incidentally Christian - have you seen the two black Tuscans for sale in the Classifieds? I've seen the Dutch one a couple of years ago and it is a very nice machine and would be a great starting point.

The other problem with doing it once and doing it right, is that especially with a race car its almost impossible to get it right first time !!
you need some experience to know what works, what doesnt and what you need to be able to do..
Im building a sagaris, and its taking a lot of time, as I do a bit when i have the time and money and then it goes back under a cover for a bit. I've got 12 years experience in racing and running lots of cars now so I know what i want the car to do.. and I now want to build it to my own specification. which will be something that works and is also built so that it can easily be taken apart. some things on my tuscan work perfectly but they are a right pita if you need to take them out.
we positioned the engine and box an optimum position for weight distribution, but this means its very very difficult to get the gearbox out..
There is quite a lot to be said imho to buy something that's running and working and build up some experience with the car and racing first ( as a driver you will develop massively in the first couple of seasons) and then build / rebuild that car to your exacting spec later.

Also...
Have you got time?
As you are now registered for 2012, you dont have time to build the car you want.

I spent 4 months prepping my Tuscan for its first race, and that was making some engine and gearbox mounts, dry sump pump fitting , exhaust and ecu for the rover...
Dave spent a fair amount of time and money to recondition the yellow peril for this season
I spent a little over 2 years building the crowthorne Tuscan as the car i wanted.in the end i have got it on the track to race then i can develope the car as and when.By far the best way to go in my opinion as your ability climbs so do the needs of the car.Best to just get racing and upgrade as you go or you will never get on track or if you do things will have moved on during the time it has taken to build and the car you have built is not competative.
I agree with all that's been said - even as a relative newbie to racing when compared to some of the old lags on here
Buy a car that's a runner and has some provenance then get out and hone your skills - and get some instruction if you've had none - its invaluable and one of the best investments you can make. Hope to see you out this year!
