Hamilton – Why that bit of wreckage?

This wasn’t really mentioned after the race but can anyone explain to me why Hamilton picked up a bit of the crash wreckage (front wing perhaps?) and took it back with him to the pit-lane.

I’ve just never seen anyone do that before... ?!

It was his favourite. He calls it George.

Looked like a wing mirror to me. Had a rectangle of very shiny material about the size of one of the wing mirrors on it as he walked down the pit lane.

edit: I'm wrong (as usual) It does have a shiny rectangle, but it's not a mirror. Wonder if what I saw was a metal skid plate from the bottom of the wing.

I did watch a Moto GP race a few years back when a rider came to grief with another rider. As he came to rest and clambered to his feet, he picked up a bit of body work and wandered to the side of the track with it, then looked at it as if to say "why did I pick this up?".

Looking at the replay, it seemed to come off during the initial contact with Grosjean, so was way back along the straight compared to where the rest of the wreckage was. I suspect he picked it up as he was walking past it back to the pits as the marshalls were a bit busy on the corner.

Probably just good housekeeping and being helpful, rather than a case of the mental.

Maybe it was a big bit that was possibly going to get in the way, so he just moved it.

His Auntie passed away last week, i think that has been playing on his mind alot as he spent quite a bit of time with her in her last few days.

I'd say that was probably it - cut short his holiday to be with her during her final days, judging by his Twitter feed.

I thought it may have been a piece of his rear wing and he was taking it back to throw at the feet of his team whilst he protested about the fact he'd never have been where he was if he'd had the rear wing that JB had.

Concidering he spent the last few weeks with his dieing aunt i'd say that was a crass and uncalled for coment esp the cocain jibe, obv comming from an hater or somone who knows fk all about the matter they are commenting on.
And it's quite obv you in fact dont try hard at all, is there a site where fans of the sport can chat with other "informed" people without the st this site produces ?
