A comparison. Second season for Vettel and Perez in F1

I think that this is a fair comparison.
Well respected in the lower formulas, signed up to a factory team as a young driver/test driver. They then get their break in F1 (admittedly Vettel's break was halfway through the year before for a race with BMW, before a full first season with Torro Rosso), then in their second season they seem to flourish.
I wonder how the rest of his season will pan out.
I think that the comparison with Vettel is quite fair, although Perez was in higher formulas before F1, whereas Vettel was plucked out of F Renault.

What's immediately obvious from the two sets of stats, is how much more consistent Vettel was.
But then the rules are different and the cars are different.
My gut feeling is Perez is good and solid, getting better in F1 all the time, particularly with overtaking and race craft... but Alonso will have nothing to fear if he moves to Ferrari, so Perez probably will (assuming the Vettel contract is BS).
Kobayashi is the best driver Japan has ever had and a great aggressive fan-pleasing overtaker, but he isn't that fast. This is Perez's only true benchmark. Taking on Alonso at Ferrari would be a whole other level and I reitterate only Hamilton and Vettel are in the same league.
Things change though. Maybe a win would transform Perez's confidence and belief. Maybe he would grow into F1. It would be nice to see that's for sure.

it was the Renault world series that Vettel did last before F1 which is only slightly below GP2 in terms of performance with the cars having 3.5 litre V6 engines so only slightly lower than Perez reached. Formula Renault is a lot lower series with smaller cars that have 2.0 engines. He was leading the chmapionship there before he came to F1Kimi Raikonnen came straight to F1 from UK Formula Renault.

Vettel only did a few races in WSBR (while also competing in F3 Euroseries simultaneously), whereas Perez had two full seasons in GP2 + the Asia series of the same.Still, a reasonable comparison. Just keep in mind the differences in cars. The STR2B was horrible, and Vettel had to contend with it for the first third of the season. Sauber's C31 is much better car than the STR2B was in comparison to their respective rivals, although less consistent.

I don't think either driver was really outstanding in the junior formulae, mattikake.Vettel was freakishly good in FBMW, but he was only "almost there" in F3 - where the real stars shine. He got beaten by PDR in 2006. Granted, he didn't get a chance to shine in WSBR, despite winning one race.
Perez was another "almost there" in both F3 and GP2. His GP2 Asia performances were disappointing.

With the tracks left on the calendar this year, i can't see a circuit where the Sauber will truly shine. I do truly think that Perez is a serious talent for F1 though. Hopefully a future WDC.
I certainly rate him far higher than Kobayashi, who i see as a pretty good racer, but not that fast in outright terms.
