The Wing is back

And in for the 2014 ALMS/GM mix:

Can't make my mind on either the Delta Wing or the ALMS/GM - I'll give both time before I decide if good or bad!

Feels like its being used as a bit of a marketing tool now rather than race car. Nissan get to enter a car at big events without having to use the resources other teams and manufacturers need to when conforming to rules and regs. Demonstrating that a light car can go fast isn't demonstrating new technology in my opinion.

So 'it' is eligible to race, despite the fact it has nothing to race against or a class to race in
Why not just announce a new class and allow everyone to race to those rules......
It's not eligible to race, it has been invited to enter, very different thing. The entry is probably a result of the ALMS/GA merger and future thoughts for that combined series. Why not just announce a new class and allow everyone to race to those rules......

So its been invited to enter, a race, the series? So it will be on track with other cars running as fast as it can, yes
Not sure where this fits into the merger at all TBH, unless they announce a new super lightweight class
I would rather see Glickenhaus getting more coverage with his hopes for getting the lovely P4/5 into LMP1.

It has been invited to run at Petit, within the race but from everything I have read it will be on the same principles as its run at Le Mans, within the race but sans category. It can't win.So it will be on track with other cars running as fast as it can, yes

Don Panoz has already said that there is a chance/likelihood of the Deltawing concept competing from 2014 in the merged ALMS/GA format, but that is so up in the air that nobody knows what the entrants to that series are going to look like.

So if it finished 1st on the road at this event, you dont think they would be advertising the fact they 'won' the race?Don Panoz has already said that there is a chance/likelihood of the Deltawing concept competing from 2014 in the merged ALMS/GA format, but that is so up in the air that nobody knows what the entrants to that series are going to look like.
Bizarre logic to suggest it isnt racing when its on track competing in a race, what else do you think its doing?

How can it 'win'? It is not in any of the classes that are entered into the race to win. It cannot score points towards the championship either (all from what I have read). If the Deltawing covers more distance than any other car, it still won't appear as the winner in the official results.Bizarre logic to suggest it isnt racing when its on track competing in a race, what else do you think its doing?
They were extremely adamant at Le Mans that they were not racing and they would do their utmost not to interfere with the race going on around them, so maybe their logic is bizarre as well.
Reading the Deltawing press release (they do use the word 'race' as well, so it's just me who's bizarre
), Don Panoz is saying that the Deltawing is specified in the ALMS/GA merger and that it is eligible to race from 2013, so it will be very interesting to see what it can achieve with more mileage and development (it is running Le Mans down force at Petit, not specific high down force). It will also be interesting to see what Ordonez does with it as well.Red Firecracker said:

With 53 cars (54 now?) its hard to see how it can't interfere with a race going on around them? Plus with LM24 entries up for grabs it would be a shame to see it get involved with teams who have built cars to these rules and with Le Mans in mind. At Petit, yes, it will be very hard, but I thought they did pretty well at Le Mans of staying clear of battles around them when they could. Plus of course you have to take into account the racing driver's mindset of wanting to compete.Wasn't there a thing recently that automatic Le Mans entries, or at least as many, are not up for grabs at Petit? Sure I heard it on Midweek Motorsport or Twitter.
ETA: Yep, IMSA are only offering three invites rather than the previous eight;

Similar logic to when the NASCAR Sprint Cup guys race in the Nationwide series? They aren't eligible for points, but can still win the race, i.e. finish first and get the silverware.Bizarre logic to suggest it isnt racing when its on track competing in a race, what else do you think its doing?

Deltawing won't get a trophy if it manages to cross the line first but I imagine Nissan will milk it as a victory. Red Firecracker said:

How did they manage to be involved in an on track accident with the overall race leader then?Their logic isnt bizarre, its a publicity/marketing ploy
It matter not what they say, but what they do
There won't ever be a class it can compete in

Since when has any factory supported motor racing ever been anything but a publicity/marketing ploy?Their logic isnt bizarre, its a publicity/marketing ploy

If nothing else, it shows that the appetite is there with the public for cars that look different. I'm all for it frankly; if they had an "open" class with tight power/weight limits to stop speeds getting crazy I think it would be pretty exciting.
