I went in 2011 but I didn't organise it. A Portuguese friend working over here in F1 organised it all seamlessly.
We flew Stansted -> Faro and stayed in a hotel owned by his GF's friend's Dad on the coast near Faro. We hired a transit minibus and drove to a number of different stages throughout the weekend. No tickets are needed and away from the busier "policed" areas, you can pretty much do what you want. Local knowledge helps but guide books showing the stages are all over the place and you can download more info from the WRC site (stage plans, times etc).
They are very keen on their rallying and the atmosphere is fantastic. You get families, groups of very drunk (but safe) people and nutters running about with chansaw motors! They also have a much more entrants than GB. Some classics and some local nutters too.
It is normally based at the football stadium just outsdie Faro and it's worth a look around the paddock. Access is free. Tickets for the super special inside the stadium are available but we didn't buy any. They need to be bought well in advance.
Flights are cheap, hotels are cheap, food is cheap and tickets are non existent. it's a winning combination!

We went to a number of stages up in the moutains mon chique direction... Racing was awesome.
Coming back though was literally one of the best things I've done... Rally fans + rental cars + windy hairpin roads (with the mentioned gravel) = an international downhill race of the highest order!
