Article sounds a little grudging, but I've been wondering where he would figure and had bet on #3.

I think it's a pretty objective list so far - much as I worship Mansell's style and find Vettel's rather, erm... annoying, his results speak for themselves. Speaking of which, I hate the obsession society seems to have with 'ranking' everything and everyone... I think this makes for a good read though!
Schumi has been slowly slipping down the order since his comeback has exposed his lack of true greatness. Some polls had him at No.2 or 3. The good news is as time goes on, he'll slip further down the order into a more worthy place.
He had an exclusive car, contract and tyre deal. It's like Vettel staying in a Newey designed Redbull for 10 years except not even Webber is allowed to drive alongside him.
The crime is that only his stats, however acquired, has somehow elvated him above Prost, who after his first season was a serious WDC contender every year, without contracts, not always the best car, exclusive tyres, team cheating, on-track cheating etc etc.
Blatently the top 3 is going to be Fangio, Senna, Clark, probably in that order.

He won seven titles, with two different teams. That doesn't happen by accident. Mercedes have been nowhere near competitive enough to make a serious challenge. Put him in a Red Bull or McLaren and I suspect he would have featured regularly on the podium.It's just ridiculous to compare the situation now with him at the height of his career.

For a number of reasons, mainly FIA assists, never a BIG admirer during the first part of his career.
Over the past three seasons, Herr Schumacher has actually gone higher in my esteem than at any time during his seven WDC seasons.
Put him back in a Ferrari or Vettel's Red Bull these past three seasons and who knows.... TEN times WDC.

I think I would've had Prost above Senna, and both of them above MSc. Although I hesitate on Senna a little as I suspect part of his greatness comes from his death, and part of the dislike of Schumacher comes from his actions against Hill - something he learnt from Senna.
But I think a more worthwhile list is judging drivers in their respective eras. You can't judge a driver from the 50's with one from the 70's or 2010's.
