I hope im not breaking any forum rules by posting this - apologies if i am!
I am currently studying for a BA in Vehicle design at Coventry Uni and for my final major project am designing a zero emissions single seat race car.
As part of the project I have to do research into the industry and the potential users of the vehicle.
I've got two short questionnaires that will take about 5 mins to fill do, one is for those who already compete and one for spectators/people generally interested in motorsport or those involved in motorsport but don't drive.
I would be extremely greatful if people could give a few minutes to fill one out. The links are just below.

just want to clarify myself for the last couple of questions though.
Its more any excitement rather than driver skill, noise etc that I remember from a day. So I would be perfectly happy to watch a zero emissions/ silent race if the cars were giving good action, meaning still plenty of power, speed etc

But I would like to expand on question 13 if I may.
If a car has zero emissions it makes no difference as to whether I'd attend a race meeting or not, but if they were completely silent then that would make a difference. Some noise is always needed with motorsport it adds to the spectacle. Even if the noise was fake, it'd still be better than none.

Done but no such thing as Zero emission really - you have to consider the emissions needed for the manufacturer of the materials and the use of the power to make it etc.
Its why electric vehicles are a nonesense - the electricity needed to power them largely comes from fossil fuel power stations for the forseable future.

But to expand slightly on the noise front. I went to watch a rally on Saturday, the last stage of which was in the dark.
We were stood in the middle of nowhere in the woods listening to the howl of a Mk2 Escort coming towards us followed by the popping and banging of a modern WRC car.
Even my missus who isn't a hardcore rallyist was taken with the noise.
A silent car just wouldn't have the same level of emotion or attraction.
But to expand slightly on the noise front. I went to watch a rally on Saturday, the last stage of which was in the dark.

Having driven a fair few EV's and observed them from the outside it just isn't the same as the noise from an IC engine on song.also...

True you get noise from the components, but the engine and exhaust note are the ones that excite me.
As for noise, this is a perennial issue - see the Britcar thread and the recent article in Trackdriver Magazine by the MD of Donington Park. I used to help out a team in the Fun Cup and even my wife who is no Petrolhead commented that the diesel engine cars just didn't sound right. However, too much noise will kill our sport because the general public are becoming less and less tolerant of it. We need a bit of noise, the right sort of noise, but it can't be loud noise!!!

Good points, I suppose a benefit of 'fake' noise could be the ability to turn it up/down depending on a circuits noise limits and 'noisy days' allowed etc which could mean more opportnities for events?andy97 said:

^ this.As in so many other arenas, it seems easy for folk to mistake quantity for quality.

I must admit the quiet zero emissions formula are a complete turn off, purely because of the lack of noise. The first event I ever attended was my local speedway. The noise and smell left a lasting impression, probably more so than the bikes!
I couldn't really express this on your survey but for me I like variety of machinery, great noises, exciting action, the smell of Castrol R and a handily located burger van. These are the things that truly matter!
