Interlagos - old F1 track

I see (from the coverage at the weekend, and google earth) that just about all the tarmac is still there from the old 4.94 mile circuit?
Including Kimi's short/long cut.

From the 'Senna S' the cars would actually be going in the wrong direction (on the old track) until they got to the first right hander.

there is footage from the late seventies races. i hate to say it because the current track is awesome, but the old track looks better...


i guess there wasn't any run off room in the first third of the old circuit

The old circuit looked to squeeze in the absolute maximum amount of circuit in the smallest possible space. Looked epic.

I've been to Interlagos 5 times now (with my work) and have traced the old circuit. It is indeed, virtually all still there, and is defintely an awesome layout. I would love to see to see it used again, which ,of course, they won't!

David Coulthard mentioned it once being an oval.
There is tarmac joining the old 'Curva 3' and Kimi's (gated) section.

You can even "drive" on the bit that Kimi ended up on using StreetView. The gate is open

Google Earth view is quite interesting. Can't see where the car parks are though!

Car parks? I don't remember any car parks at Interlagos.

It's interesting looking at that layout and the shape of the corners when you think about your typical Tilke drome, which seems to require a slow corner long straight into slow hairpin to encourage overtaking, look at all those long fast sweepers probably 3rd or 4th gear fast entrances to the corner, probably would mean it was difficult to follow close behind in a modern f1 car dependent on so much aero, perhaps it says something about old f1 cars - no aero, steel brakes, manual unreliable gearboxes. Perhaps we get the GP tracks the cars deserve.
