Can we talk about Octaine boosters a bit.I am not convinced that V-Max is any good and was thinking i might buy ordinary pump fuel and add octaine booster. Some people i have talked to agree that V-max aint worth the extra money for a gain if any. What do you use? and thoughts on a small self addressed and stamped post card please.

Are some accepted as valve lubricants?

(of course with a side effect of enhanced octane)

When I had the Taz, I used V Power with Millers CVL Turbo for a while. Was always washing the carbs out and it left a heavy brown deposits on the plugs. Stopped using that and went on to Sunoco 100 octane race fuel (classified as MSA pump fuel), after the compression ratio was increased. That stuff is brilliant but bloody expensive and it rots through cheapo fuel lines. I just run the Tuscan on Tesco 99 now, it seems good enough.

I will be using the Sunoco 100 when the old bus gets back on track for the nasty brown deposit reasons you mention Dave.

John, I'm sure that you already have, but make sure you have the very best fuel pipes. It doesn't take long torot the ordinary stuff

Thanks Dave. Fuel lines are being replaced and will keep the advice in mind when the time comes to purchase.

From what i can make out that would be ok Tim, hence asking about benifits of a booster. Some people have been telling me paying the extra 6-7p a litre would be better spent on additives within the regs of course.

In the Blue Book and the Series Regulations, pump fuel is the only fuel allowed and therefore all additives are illegal. It is my understanding that if caught using any additive a driver/team will be excluded.

Dave Chant chose to run the high octane fuel supplied by Sunoco which is graded as a pump fuel and very very expensive. That fuel is legal but does not necessarily suit standard set ups and may only work properly if timing etc are altered.

The octane ratings and the consistency of the fuel are the main points and I run Shell V-Power because of this (97 RON). It is just a better more consistent fuel than the standard 95 RON unleaded. It is always worthwhile bearing in mind that if you carry fuel to meetings (which I believe is in breach of road traffic regulations!!) you should purchase it from a high turnover site where you are less likely to get impurities. Supermarkets are good examples.

So if you are thinking of adding Toluene, Acetone or any other additives I would recommend you think again (particularly as this has now been aired on an open forum). It is always best to read the championship regulations and the MSA blue book as this will almost certainly answer any questions posed. The posted TVR regulations are quite clear on this, pump fuel as defined by the MSA only

Hi Hui,

It,s not a case of anyone cheating, why would they in the Challenge it's just for fun after all, different matter if there was more than a trophy. No one i know in the challenge would want to gain an advantage by cheating the regs.I was curious as i have been discussing tolune with a drag racing mate(potentialally nasty for your heads )which for him is legal to run, this got us onto was v-power worth it.

Hui. i think the reason some do use additives is because the older engines (essex) need Tetra ethyl lead to stop valve seat recession This isn't an issue with the AJP or the Rover which have hardened seats as std.

Avgas used to be available from Pumps wink

I think this is the alternative name for the much more expansive sunoco 100!!

I dont think anyone is worried about anyone cheating, because there are either a bhp limit or no limit so the fuel doesnt make any difference. But rather the msa restrict us to pump fuel , and they do have the right to test fuel and if you were using it you could have a big problem and would look bad for the series. as an aside has anyone bothered with the fuel take off thats required by the msa/fia?

Lead replacement stuff is a different issue iirc.

And there are those lead replacements that are accepted for use that provide enhanced octane...

Millers product I recall?

I have a fuel take off. I drain the fuel after every session to weigh what is left, compare against what went in and double check the calculated fuel consumption. Kind of important for us. It would be a PITA to drain fuel without it.

And I have had to give a fuel sample at the end of a Britcar race.
