Hi All,

I have been given access to the a number of Glass Negatives from the early 60's. They are mainly Silverstone, F1 and Trophy stuff. I'd be grateful if anyone can ID any drivers, cars, locations, dates, etc.

I’ve added some more photos today, about 20 more to go…

Keep an eye on the gallery over the coming days, if you can add your comments to the gallery, I’d be grateful :-)

Thanks!

Christ! That lot are pretty amazing.
The BRDC have an active archivist at the circuit, looked after very well by Stephanie Sykes on 01327 850927 or steph.sykes@brdc.co.uk. Be so interested in working through those.

Brilliant! I recognise some of those and have inclins on others, but there are those in the Club who will know ...

Wow. If you can find someone to clean those up, there are a couple that would make fantastic prints... I'd buy a few.

SAL75 is still about.

John Chatham is still alive as well... he might like to see them:

http://johnchathamcars.co.uk/

Article on him:
http://www.classicandperformancecar.com/features/o...

"John learned the trade fast and, much to his dad’s disapproval, his sporting aspirations grew equally quickly. A Willys Jeep gave way to a Consul convertible with a Mays head, then a Zephyr convertible – ‘a much better woman-puller, as it had a power hood’ – and then, in 1960, to his first Healey 100, SAL 75. Within a couple of years his name was featuring on the results sheets of rallies, hillclimbs, sprints and races all over the country; in 1964 he decided four cylinders were no longer enough and bought a wrecked ex-works Healey 3000, DD 300, to rebuild and race."

Great pics! Slightly off-topic, but how do you scan the glass negatives successfully?

I used a basic multifunction home ink jet printer!

Very gingerly laying the dusted (with a camera lens brush) glass neg matt side down and scanning at 1200 x 1200 (good enough for my needs) with the lid off. I have the scanner near a big window for a bit of natural light. Then, in the image editing software of your choice (I use Fireworks), I flip horizontal (matt side is back-to-front from the scanner's perspective), then invert and then auto-correct.

It's by no means perfect but it does allow me to record these things digitally and can make half decent prints at A4 and can zoom in nicely too. I understand there are specialist companies that will do super high-res digital scans and will also make proper prints.

If anyone is interested in 1200 x 1200 copies please do get in touch and I'll get back to you.

Back from a snow covered Silverstone, nothing running frown

Still, was great to sit and chat with Steph in the BRDC Farm house - wonder how many famous bums have sat on the very sofa I was sat on... So the originals are now in the safe keeping of the BRDC Silverstone Archives and there are already plans and ideas to publish some of them in one or more of their journals...
