If you were in the Millenium Stadium when McRae entered in the Skoda a fews years back, perhaps you'd have a different view of his (back then) Legend status.The noise was incredible and will remain with me always.
I never worshipped the bloke as I am not particularly a Jap car or Ford fan and I don't for one minute claim to know what kind of bloke he was out of a car.
He was however one of our best rally drivers.

Rally drivers drive in rallies, that's what they do, they're all quite good at it.
There have been loads of drivers who are just as good as him, and there will be in the future as well.
He's no more of a driving legend than anyone else.
There are people who are good at darts, snooker, badminton etc. but are they darts, snooker or badminton legends?
No, of course not, they are just people who are quite good at something they do.
I'm good at typing comments on the Internet, but am I an Internet legend?

Now, there are plenty of other drivers, rally drivers even were arguably "better"...Loeb, Tommi Mak, Sainz, Ari Vat, Juha, Hannu, Stig, Rohrl, Aaltonen etc, etc, but did they do what McRae did? No. He is a legend not so much for his achievements, but for simply what he could do in the car and how he did them. He is probably the most talented rally driver of all time, in the same way that Gilles was almost certainly the most talented F1 pilot of all time. I say probably because Sandro Munari has a large shout against that...and yes I would put Munari above everybody else in that list I just mentioned.
To witness a full blown Mac Attack was just plain watching the unexplainable.
That makes him a legend, the flawed genius.
To me he's a legend because he became a household name, as anyone to name 3 rally drivers from the 90s and most people will say his name first, then probable Sainz, followed by some confused looks, grumbles and the word 'dunno'
