Hope someone can help on this. Probably a dumb question, but I'm interested to know how the numbers are assigned to the cars racing in Le Mans. Presumably 1, 2 and 3 are based on previous years' performance, but what of the rest?

Can anyone help? (hopefully this is the right place to ask rather than the Le Mans thread in 'Events')

It's done by class, P1s have lower numbers than P2s, then GT Pro, then GT AM

If memory serves No.7 has won a lot of races particularly for Joest, initially with porsche power, and Joest is running the Audi team with Dr Ulrich.

And consequently lucky #7 is chosen by Audi whenever they aren't defending champions and wearing #1. Perhaps everyone considers it lucky.

There is a guide to numbering on the silverstone website here for the silverstone round of the wec. Explains it all pretty well, I'm assuming its the same for Le Mans

I think you can request numbers from the ACO - Aston had 007/009
Indeed, local teams such as Pescarolo and Luc Alphand have raced with the number '72' in honour of the department number of the Sarthe.
