group 6 '66 + LMP1 '13 Questions
Discussion
Lets start at the beginning,
Group 6 sports car prototypes,
As I understand it there was no max capaity (and I assume no max power output), however there was a min weight, what was the minimum, Im guessing 580 ish kg, given I know Alfas 33/2 plus 906 was 580.
And something new,
Whats the max power for a LMP1 engine in 2013, I believe the diesels are 520.
Thanks oh and Ive looked at the rues and regs, didnt seem to state on the ACO's webistes document on max power, I take it its not free...

LMP1 engines (in fact all ACO reg engines) are (under the 2012 regs) restricted on displacement (LMP1 not number of cylinders) depending on type of fuel and fuel cell size, with performance being managed or balanced by way of air flow restriction. There is no defined maximum, or minimum, BHP which would be a nightmare to police and be even more of a potential cock up than some BOP measures. The formula is much more complex though as Hybrid systems need to be taken into consideration and additionally longevity needs to be balanced against performance. Le Mans is essentially a 24 hour sprint now, so a highly strung fragile engine may give you pole and local (or national if you're a dancing lion) media coverage, but a slightly slower/lower tuned engine/car has a greater chance of providing bragging rights come Sunday afternoon. Of course, that all ignores the nut holding the wheel, which if you're Hugh Chamberlain, is the bit to send you grey!
