FIA wants demerit point F1 penalty system

Formula one chiefs will meet next weekend in Barcelona to discuss a potential demerit-points system that could lead to drivers facing race bans for repeat misbehaviour.
Reports, including by the news agency AFP and the British newspaper the Times, said the FIA’s Charlie Whiting will meet with team bosses to talk about the new regime.
The reports said the new system could replace the mainly grid penalties and fines that are currently levied against drivers for on-track misbehaviour.
The new system would see drivers tote up demerit points against their mandatory super license, with multiple indiscretions to add up to race bans.
“It’s a complex question,” Whiting is quoted as saying, “and we need to get the balance right because banning a driver is a serious issue.
“We need to make sure a driver genuinely deserves any ban.
“We will be monitoring offences and running a (hypothetical) system in the background to see how it would all work if put into practice.”

No racing driver is going to give up an overtake if its there, the problem is the ones that aren't there but they go for it anyway.

This would just be the same as instead of a 10 place grid penalty you'd get 3-5 pt penalty.

Whats the issue with a driver being banned (like Grosjean was) if they have caused a number of incidents through bad driving ?
No issue with a ban where deserved (such as you mention), but totting up points for minor incidents to result in a ban is like being caught 4 times doing 32 in a 30 zone and then being banned from driving.Frankly, I'll wait on the outcome of the discussions before jumping to conclusions.

I can remember a time when the best driver/car/setup combination on any particular race day won the race. It still doesn't seem that long ago.
But then they messed with it all. They allowed the computer guys to take over the config of the car, they brought in DRS, mandatory tyres, silly KERS systems, silly qualifying rules and now review boards who seemingly look to penalise just about every racing incident.
In my view the lunatics (or more accurately, lawyers) have taken over the asylum. We're in an era where some of the greatest drivers to have graced the sport are competing and yet I just find myself not caring about it any more and yearning for the purity of what the sport used to be.
I agree with the above poster. If the idiots bring this penalty idea in then it will spell the end of a lot of overtaking, for worry about being embroiled in a deliberate impact. Vettel will almost certainly use a rule like this as a tactic for example, and the others will soon follow.
F1 is a shadow of it's former self. Absolutely a slave to the money involved. The teams should all quit and go and do banger racing instead. At least there's some competition in that.

So can you explain how its going to kill overtaking exactly? Driver makes a pass, gains a place, no problem.
Driver makes a pass, gets outbraked, drops back behind, no problem.
Drive makes a pass, badly judges his braking, continues with the pass and ends up t-boning another car and taking it out. Penalty points may be given.
I fail to see the problem.
I think some people just want to have a whine and a moan for the sake of it.
