What with Porsche advertising their return to Lemans with a shiny new 2014 spec LMP1 car, I got thinking that great old motorsport nerd question of 'who else should don their race suit again?'

Of course brands love it, Porsche has got people watching McQueen stick his Vs up again on Blu-ray, Bentleys GT3 has caused a stir (not only because of its diet...)with returning to GT racing and Alpine has started its rise into the sports car market with a return to La Sarthe.

Personally I have a few. As you may have guessed.

Alfa Romeo to Lemans

With a rather impressive history in motorsport, creating some rather successful cars in everything from TC to Prototypes, It would be great to see them return with a LMP1 car.

They WON numerous times at Lemans with the 8C, as well as a 'better-late-than-never' World sports car championship with their final evolution of the Tipo 33 in 1975. I blame the exploitation of the group 5 loop hole, yes Porsche 917 I'm looking at you...

Not only would it nice to see a renaissance for Alfa Romeo given their extensive history in the sport, but also because the triangular nose of the modern LMP cars would suit the Alfa grill perfectly...

Lancia to rallying

With the success of VW with the cracking Polo WRC car, it would be nice to see the FIAT group revive the Lancia brand with a 3door hatch on the WRC,combine coupe-hatch looks (think 2008 Scirocco)with a bit of hot hatch madness (think Focus RS mk2) to add another competitor on the stages. Chuck in an Abarth turbo unit for added authenticity and some Martini colours and watch grown men wipe away a tear of joy...

Remember I said 'wish' would return, any talk that is other than wide eyed dreaming will be frowned upon...

The new LMP1 does seem made for Jaguar - in fact all mainstream car manufacturers. But lets have a nice green Jaguar or 2 back in the big class please.

Subaru need to get their @rse back to rallying too. They need eachother.

Wouldn't mind seeing Mercedes back at Le Mans either.

Hmm.

They're "returning" this year with a factory team, albeit in GT-Pro.
True, but somewhat less impressive than a full prototype car, plus the 911s have been privateered for ever so no real 'new' cars as such.

Which reminds me that somewhere out there is a pumped up Trabant with the running gear from an Escort Cosworth somehow shoehorned into it (sadly I can't find a link).

But back to the subject of the thread - Honda only escape a mention by virtue of having announced their upcoming return to F1. It would be nice to see the top class at Le Mans include Jaguar and a Renown liveried Mazda to succeed the 787B too.

As for rallying - Subaru and Toyota could do with a serious return, but the Lancia/Chrysler range is so ugly that they can wait until they have a nicer car before they come back as far as I am concerned.

Williams to F1...

Seriously though, it must be getting on for a decade since they regularly scored podium finishes, for a team once capable of leading from the front I would welcome the return of Franks team.

In my dream world it would indeed be a new car, although I don't hate the Lancia rebodied 500, but not really what I had in mind.

Agree with both of these, plus a proper mini in the wrc (not the damn countryman-what were they thinking?!)
