Kimi and Jean Todt was and still is quite close, when Jean Todt left Ferrari at the end of 2007 Kimi's position within the team weakened. When it comes to Kimi's time at Ferrari we have only been hearing Ferrari's side of the story for years now. When Alonso had a difficult season at Mclaren everyone knew his side of the story. Or when Lewis lost out to Button recently everyone knew his side of the story. But Kimi has remained tight lipped, perhaps to his own detriment. According to Ferrari he was a bad developer and he couldn't lead the team. While he seems to be doing quite a good job in these departments at Lotus right now.
A month or so ago Domenicalli was asked who his favorite driver is, after Alonso and Massa, and he answered, Kimi. He was also asked, who he would choose as drivers if he could take anyone, and he said Alonso and Kimi. Offering Kimi a contract fits in with that. But Kimi would never drive for Ferrari again.

Well they paid Raikkonen to leave before and he arguably delivered better results than Fernando has. So I'd agree that he's not irreplaceable. However I don't think any of the recent results are anything to do with Alonso's driving that's solely down to Ferrari's current technical infrastructure. I might condense this story into "Ferrari remind Alonso he's not irreplaceable and no one Man is bigger than the Scuderia".

Kimi currently earns less then drivers like Webber, Button and Massa. And Lotus are often not even paying his salary. That doesn't seem like someone who is only motivated by money. He didn't do well in 2008. But really everyone made a lot of mistakes that season. Both Lewis and Massa also made a few race ended mistakes. Massa alone completely crashed out of the first two races by himself, Lewis drove directly into Kimi's back at a red light. It was a sloppy season. The only driver from the top runners who didn't make a lot of mistakes was Kubica.
For 5 years I have only seen what Ferrari has had to say about Kimi's time there. There are many clues that makes it appear not to be as straight forward as Ferrari has made it appear.
Of course everyone is free to believe whatever they want.

But Lotus was a good way back in to the sport, given the way he left the sport and his public persona I think many teams wouldn't have taken the risk on him, especially when not many had seats available anyway.Its very fortunate that the Lotus has been competitive enough for wins/podiums etc. Imagine if he'd signed for Williams!
His stock is much improved now and the initial risk no longer exists, hence I would suspect he'll get a decent jump in salary if/when he moves.
