I've often wondered what the continentals would make of our Shelsleys and Prescotts etc. Would they, like us, get wrapped up in the beauty of the locations and history of the venue etc - or would they just laugh?

Apparently if they can come up with some joint regs then there may be an event of the European championships here in 2014. The main issue is the European hills are run to FIA rules which are different to RAC MSA ones.

just how much time is he at terminal velocity? (and what is that for a GP2 car?)

First time I watched this was with the sound turned off, and I was mightily impressed.

But bloody hell, I've just re-watched it on full volume. That is just scary.

You've got to take your hat off to these guys who can drive like that on a course like that.

Been trying to figure out exactly where the course is on the satellite view, by comparing it the video shots, and I think I've cracked it.

If you drag the satellite view to the right a bit, to reveal more of the view to the west, you'll see a place right next to the north bank of the river where there are a number of cars parked in a lot, and the road curves upwards around that building: I think that's the garage you can see to the right of the car a few seconds after the start, so the start itself is a little bit to the left of that garage, next to the river.

Immediately after the garage, heading east, we peel off onto the side-road north of the main road, brushing the top of the red "A"-flag on the satellite view, to avoid that roundabout, rejoining the main road soon afterwards.

Then if you follow that road along, you can see where it first goes under the railway viaduct and, shortly afterwards, under the Autobahn.

Keep following the road generally east (it gets partially obscured by trees at some points), and eventually you'll see the right-left, and then right, hairpin bends near the end of the course.

He's probably at maximum down-force with very short gearing. Even so, I think around 280 +/- 10kph would be the likely v-max.

I have befriended a chap in Austria who works for Team Edlinger who prepares the BMW 320 IRL after writing an article on the car (http://www.racetechmag.com/features-1/clubmans/hill-climb/item/344-king-of-the-mountain.html). Really fascinated by their style of hillclimbing and looking quite seriously at going out to the Rechberg next year. The FIA Championship looks fantastic.

This video is the embodiment of it. Amazing.

Fascinating wathcing the various clips. How smooth the GP2 driver is - no sudden yanking of the steering, no huge throttle changes mid corner. Maybe I misunderstand the different driving styles of the different cars but the GP2 seems so less ragged than some of the others.

I guess the main difference between the European hillclimbs and the UK ones is that ours are run on specifically tracks rather than closed off public roads. Switzerland don't have race tracks but allow roads to be closed, we have tracks but pretty much don't allow roads to be closed.

Not sure how long it would take to master all the corners on one of these, Harewood is hard enough to get right and that only has 9 corners (depending how you count them).

Gearing and downforce is probably very similar to Monaco spec, that looks absolutely mental though, cant even begin to imagine what a current f1 car would be like if it was adapted....
