Sean Edwards - Re Make the last race non points scoring

I had this posted on my Facebook and thought it should be shared with the people that had so many words of respect from PH.

Porsche, you have the opportunity do something rare and very special. We are asking you to elect to hold the final two rounds of the 2013 Porsche SuperCup (rounds 8 and 9 on November 2/3 at the Yas Marina Circuit) as non-points scoring rounds.
We believe that the rightful champion of the 2013 season has already been crowned, however he won't be able to attend the final race to make it a formality. Racers and fans around the world are mourning the loss of driver, Sean Edwards, who currently leads the Supercup Championship by 18 points, with 3 wins in 7 races. With a win being worth 20 points, and Sean never having finished lower than 5th, he was bound to be champion. If his nearest competitor were to win both races at the final round, Sean would only need to match his worst finish so far (5th) and the championship would still go to him. If Sean were to win the first race of the weekend, he could park his car and score no points during race 2 - and still be champion. Even his competitors can't argue: Sean Edwards has dominated Porsche Supercup this year. He deserves the title.
We want to make sure that Sean goes down in the record books as he was in the hearts and minds of his family, friends and competitors: a Champion. Please dedicate the final two races of Porsche Supercup to Sean Edwards, implore your drivers to race in his honor and put on a fantastic show for the fans. Pay them their prize money and hire the good ones to factory drives for next year. But do not award them any points.
Please, Porsche; make Sean Edwards your 2013 SuperCup champion and celebrate in his honor at the championship party in Abu Dabhi.

Hmm, not sure about this.. Whilst its a genuinely nice idea, if I was chasing the championship would I want to just give it up? Would I want to race for no points? Who pays for the cars to be there-it doesn't just happen! And with due respect (and I have to admit that I don't follow Porsche supercup..) is 3 wins from 7 'domination'?
Nice idea, and I get the sentiment but somehow it doesn't seem right to me.
Would he have wanted this 'gift'? I don't know, because I don't know much about the poor fellow, but if it was me then 'probably not'

Dont think this should happen. It devalues the racing, and the effort all the other teams and drivers put in. I'm sure Sean wouldn't want to win like that either.
Just letting the racing and championship take it's course is the best thing to do.

If there's no consensus, however and pretending for a moment that I were 2nd in the championship now, I'd probably let the race run it's course and if I ended up in a championship-winning position at the end of the race I'd just 'adjust my track position' on the final lap.

I actually agree with this. What I would personally like to happen is for Michael Ammermüller and Nicki Thiim to each invite one of the Porsche factory drivers to replace them in one race at the final round. I'd further like to see a potential winner drive Sean's car for him in the last event - maybe Rast, Tandy or Lieb. That ought to pretty much cover it without compromising the integrity of the series nor affecting the exposure of the sponsors.Otherwise it will devalue the championship.
If anyone is in contact with the affected parties - perhaps the idea could be floated?
Really difficult one this. It would feel better if left to the two other contenders, but that's massive (or massively unfair) pressure on them. Either way the first of the two final rounds can run as normal. If I were in contention I think I'd want to win the next round then pull over from the lead of the final round. I suppose the question is whether the other guy does the same!

On the other hand, would you like to inherit a championship win from the departed knowing you didn't do a good enough job all year and only won it because the opposition and championship leader ceased to exist?Nice idea, and I get the sentiment but somehow it doesn't seem right to me.

It would be a tarnished victory in my book knowing the opposition wasn't in a position to fight till the end.
It's a testament to safety and the greatly reduced chance of fatal accidents these days that we are having this discussion. It is only because such accidents are so rare these days that we are able to discuss this option. Back in the 50's, 60's 70's 80's there would have been no chance of such a discussion because there was still the very real chance of fatal accidents for the remaining competitors.
I agree with the thoughts that it is up to the drivers themselves to decide. At the end of the day it is them that will live with the outcomes of whether to race for points or not so it is they who should decide what to do.

If my team and sponsors were in agreement this is what I'd do.I remain in the 'make sure that Sean is the victor at the end of the season' camp. Only thing i want to see is for his rivals to 'lose' the title fairly.
I dont believe anyone should be 'pushed off though. That isnt the way to do it.
Maybe the rivals 'retire' at the end of the first lap or at the end of the penultimate lap. I know its a difficult thing to weigh up however i firmly believe that if anyone other than Sean is crowned at the end of the season their title will be a litle tainted.
