I totally agree, I can't see the relevance in this at all.
The cynic in me would say that his management and McLaren are pushing this angle to raise his sponsorship potential. Personally I think his peddling ability is more than enough.
Whatever though, that's four British drivers in Formula 1 next season. Great stuff !
If it's true then that's fantastic and well-deserved.
As for the ethnicity angle, I think it's a good thing if it brings F1 to new communities - no one complains when a driver from a new country enters F1, at least not when they earn their place in the pack.
If it gets rid of the 'rich white man's sport' image then it's a good thing.

yes what an achievement
all it took was 15 years of sponsorship and total backing from .........Mclaren
how sensible of them to see all those years ago that all it would take to get this "raw" talent in to an F1 car would be hundreds of thousands of pounds and an F1 team in the wings!!

Its not that he's black that I particularly care. Its because he's another British driver in F1. And that is something I will cheer about. The fact that he's very quick is a bonus.
Of, course, I knew him when he was in F Renault days, I spoke to him once. I said "hey! You're Lewis Hamilton. Good luck in the race" and he said "Thanks. thats very kind of you..."

Who cares what creed, colour, denomination, etc he is, hes got there thru hard work. Yes hes had the backing of Mclaren, but how many of us want anything enough to essentially give up 10 years of a normal childhhod into adolescence to pursue their dream. I certainly wouldnt/couldnt have done. That makes him an outstanding character in my book. Ive never met him, in fact dont even follow F1 that much these days, but glad that someone that 'talked the talk' all those yeras ago, will now the chance to 'walk the walk'. Lets hope he can do it.....

i think the key attributes a world class driver demonstrates is the ability to get 'upto speed' quickly. by that i mean in Hamiltons case, how long it takes him to out qualify Alfonzo, and then how long it takes him to do it consistently. after that it is how long it takes him to outrace alfonzo, through setting quicker laps more consistently.
on the first point i can see hamilton ( if he is indeed the second coming) out qualifying Alfonzo once or twice in the first half of the season, however i cannot see him out racing Alfonzo this year ( not unless Alfonzo is compromised for some reason or other during a race).
schumi outqualified de cesaris on his first race, and piquet in his second, however both were at that point a spent force, Alfonzo on the other hand is at the top of his game. i think it is going to be incredibly difficult for Hamilton beat Alfonzo more often than not.
however he needs to lay down markers all the way through the season, and by seasons end be considered to be as quick...
hopefully big ron will give him a couple of years, by the end of year two there will be no excuses, he'll have to perform at least at the same level.
