Are BMW really slower.

BMW are saying the need 3/10 second to be up there with the top two teams but i can not help feeling if any one of the top three drivers had been in the car they would have been right up there in 07. Nick & Robert are fine drivers but not in the same class as Kimi,Lewis and Fernando.

i think the BMW was slower, robert and nick are both very good drivers and i'd rate them every bit as good as massa at least. this was the first full year that BMW had their own chassis and aero developments (last year was a development of sauber designs), so you can't expect the car to have been up to the pace of mclaren and ferrari, given that established teams that have been making current F1 cars for a pretty long time now really struggled this year.
The board of BMW are giving the management of the team a reported US $250 million a year (maybe more) to win races. The plan is a four year one so lets see what happens in 2008/9? They have the people and the technology but can they find the magic that allows the car to 'talk' to the drivers and the engine to mirror the chassis performance along with the tyres and the new lack of drive aids. Many ingredients but only one pie!
it's possibly the cars that have allowed those three drivers to be more confident in overtaking tho... having watched them closely throughout the year, neither kubi or heidfeld are a stranger to overtaking, in particular kubi - can't wait to see them in a car that's closer to the top

I was 3/10ths off the pace of my kart clubs race winner and national champion.
I had a cupboardful of 2nd 3rd and fourth place trophies and was second in the club championship.
3/10ths may have just as well have been 3 seconds.
Try as I might it was a gap that wouldn't close.
I was in a cheap chassis while my rival had the best.

I personally think BMW should have done better this year, not on race pace or outright speed but it seemed like tey dropped off a ton towards the end of the year especially Nick (could be testing parts for next years car) They should have done better to pick up places and podiums when any of the top 4 cars dropped out, it seemed like when the top 4 dropped out BMW had problems or just seemed to drop the ball giving podiums and good points away to those who were behind in raw pace IE Hekki and Vettel.
I dont personally think it was the drivers either, Rob seems to have great car control and certainly has the pace when the car is setup well and lets not forget some would say Nick should have been the one in the Macs a few years back and not Kimi, he beat Kimi over the season when they were teamates at sauber and also Massa yet he never got the better seats.
