Its the start of what was the forrest straight at hockenheim, what was one of my favourite GP circuits to watch, It at least had some character unlike the desert based concrete things that we now have inflicted upon us in the name of "progress".

It was also just up what was that straight and round a bit where Jim Clark died.

At least it's not been built on and tarmac could if needed be laid down again in years to come when the tree huggers have been buried underneath it.

Could have gone the same way as Riverside which now has a shoppng centre, the Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse and houses built on it.

F1, Ecclestone and the FIA showed their true colours when the old Hockenheim was destroyed.

It was really at this point that I realised that care and respect for the sport and its history and culture was very low down on their list of priorities. All that mattered as the mighty £ or $ etc.

A whole book can now be written titled:

"Grand Prix Racing - My Part in its Destruction as a Spectacle" - By Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosely.

It's funny, isn't it, that when Hockenheim was first used in F1 (1970?), it was seen as characterless after the Nurburgring? Just as the new Nurburgring was seen as characterless when it was unveiled in the mid-'80s.

Now we miss the old Hockenheim and see the new 'Ring as one of the 'old' circuits. It's a sad path the sport's heading down...

fuji is a bit shit... compared to suzuka...

I think tilke took a while to learn to build a decent track (rather than a decent venue...)

perhaps they should get someone else to do a few though.

The ethos of F1 has changed utterly over the past 30 years. We now "design" circuits to suit the capabilities of the drivers and the cars. In the past, the drivers and cars had to adapt to suit the idiosyncrasies of each circuit. That was part of what Grand Prix racing was about.

Most older cicuits weren't "designed" in the modern sense anyway. They often grew out of public roads and were only "modified" for racing.

I remember walikng up there when I went to my first Grand Prix, it was 1986 and I was 11. My Dad was in the RAF and we lived in Germany at the time. We'd never been to a Grand Prix and didn't know what to expect, so we both had our smartest clothes on.

However my Dad didn't bring anywhere near enough money for grandstand seats! so we had to walk up through the forest to the Bremskurve, It seemed to take forever to get there, I'll never forget the sight of a Williams going past us flat-out, it was just a blur! Anyway got the the spectating area (near the Jim Clark memorial) to find it full of drunk Germans in shorts and Ferrari T-shirts! Me and my dad must have looked such idiots...

That's quite depressing. From the pictures you'd almost think there had never been anything there. I don't remember there being the most exciting races at Hockenheim, but it was always a spectacle.
