so i guess that means really they are 1.6 seconds behind the rest but as he is the spantard, he has reduced that deficit to 1 second. just like he took .6 to mclaren eh?

what did he say when he was at mclaren? he gave them .6 seconds. so surely someone of his excellent calibre can give the renault .6 of that second they are missing?

I still don't understand your objection. He says they have a deficit of approximately one second and that they need to make up that deficit. He hasn't said how much of a contribution he thinks he is able to make. If were to say that he thinks he can make them six tenths of a second faster, would you no longer object?

I think Stew's sentiments were less motivated by Alonso's comments this year, which as usual were meaningless, and more so by Alonso's behaviour last year, which was deplorable, and which he will never live down.

Can't see anything wrong with what he said, myself. He's just being plain realistic: we have a slow car, we need to make it faster before the season starts and the team is working hard on that, I'm trying to give as much as I can to make that happen. Typically boring F1 press comment.

Alonso is double world champion, so don't scoff at his "calibre". If he can cut the deficit by 0.6s per lap (wouldn't be surprised if he could), good on Renault!

yup. i love that word so much.

its typical alonso. if he fails this year to do anything, he will lay the blame squarely on renault underperforming.
him saying he took .6 to mclaren, well, if he is that damn good, then that leaves renault only needing to make up .4 unless his laps are already so good.

If you flip it, the popular saying amongst those spannering on racecars goes something like:

"we win as a team, and lose as a driver".

This year should be a good test for Alonso IMO. The Renault isn't really a match for Ferrari and Mclaren, but he'll probably get his preferential treatment he so badly wants. As noted above, making out things are awful to start with, makes some things post quote, seem an excellent feat or improvement.

Regardless of whether he'll do the business or not, I'd expect some first class comments from him this year, when things don't go swimmingly.

having just read jackie stewarts autobiography, i was astonished to read so many excuses.... and so many acts of heroism on his part to drive round the solution and win so many of the races... the book really changed my opinion of him, wish i had never read it....

He's also making sure that the team get a big Spanish boot up their backsides to give him the best car they can. I'm sure that Flav won't really appreciate this comment, coming at the same time as Mr. B himself said that Renault were looking to take the top step of the podium in 2008.

Can you really make up a full second from now until the end of the year, or is this Alonso confirming that he won't be challenging for the championship, or even race wins this year?

Bet he wishes (sometimes) that he was still with McLaren.
