Motorsport trailers

I have an small Woodford open deck car transporter and am keen to ensure security from pondlife. This trailer is fitted with an Bradley D5050 hydratow hitch and I am having trouble finding a high quality hitch lock for it, even Bradley were not over helpful! Just how do you secure yours like when in the infamous motorway services for a comfort break. Thanks.

does it have a hole in the side of the hitch for a lock?
you can buy just the barrel and key. you cant lift the hitch up without unlocking it then.

Thanks Eccles, I have tried previously the manufacturer who gave me an lead for security locks, fairly crap site tho and not what I am looking for. Done loads of Googles and found that 99.9% of hitch locks do not fit the D5050, I already have an barrel lock I recently purchased to fit the hitch, this seems a little lightwieght to me. I am using my Sons Monster chain/lock at the moment whilst trailer is parked in my garden. Since asking for help I have now found one lock to cover the hitch, its an SAS Fortress, I shall give that a go.

Do I sound paranoid of theft? Its most likely because my Son had his R1 lifted and I had a car nicked from my driveway some years back.

I use a Bulldog Hitch Lock which has a cover over the handle, a plate that sits in the ball hitch and a lower part that slide underneath and it's all secured by a 1 inch round steel pin with one of those slide in circular keys.
I also use a wheel clamp while it's on my drive. I don't think there is any completely secure method of locking them but any way to slow the scrotes down is better than none.
When I am traveling with it I try not to let it out of my sight if possible when I stop for a break.

I normally just use a big chain and high quality lock when I'm leaving the trailer attached to the vehicle when parked up for any amount of time. Have to take it off when driving though as the rattling is very irritating.

I use one of those high quality motorbike chains and locks. they are plastic covered so dont rattle..

When Its parked up I use a wheel clamp.

as has been said neither are guaranteed to stop a scrote but it would slow them down a bit the wheel clamp is such a tight fit it takes me 10 mins to take it off with the key !!

I put a hitchlock on and take the wheels off leaving it on axle stands.

I've wired a Judas plug into mine for when its sat in my yard, almost forgot about it once. My thoughts are that if they want to nick it they will so I can at least try to inconvenience them while they're at it. Never used anything while out on the road...maybe I should invest in a chain.

1. For those who don't know about a Judas socket, I hide the two correct sockets in the A frame and have the obvious one (the judas) dangling waiting to be connected, basically every wire is sent straight to earth, hence blows the fuse the first time the lights, brakes, indicators etc are put on.

Had a wheel clamp and hitch lock on mine - the tea leaves just picked it up and put it on a flat bed lorry then drove off!

If it had also bee chained to something that may have helped?

Your right, its impossible to stop a determined thief. I use my Sons motorbike chain and lock wrapped around a convenient pear tree and the trailer chassis at the moment. I watched a sales pitch for a new security chain on the web and it makes interesting viewing. www.almax-security-chains.co.uk

I use CCI to insure my Caterham and they cover my trailer too for an extra £25 or so.
