I've not really been keeping up with F1 developments over the winter and today picked
up a copy of F1 Racing. So whats the deal with the funny little grill on the nosecones
and do they have any function? Also, who was first with this?

thanks

Air conditioning for the driver's tootsies.

Actually I don't know, but they aren't new. They've been around a few seasons already. smile

They do aid cooling around the drivers feet, but also help with pressure buildup around the front of the nosecone. First used in late 1990's.

Right first time, simply driver cockpit ventilation. Nothing to do with aerodynamic performance. If it's cooler or wet they often close them off.
