Even in the flush times, Brown wouldn't put his hand in his (of course, actually our) pocket. Now that he's painted himself into a very awkward financial corner, I can't see him changing tack.

Just look at the sickening amount of money that's being pissed away on the Olympics, which will do Britain essentially no good at all, except as a vanity project for politicians.
What have, for example, British Cycling done? They identified track cycling as a area in which the compeititon was not as keen as it is in certain other sports disciplines. It also has the advantage of having an absolute shedload of separate Olympic sub-events (10, which means 30 medals to be handed out).
Therefore British Cycling have spent the last decade securing big public funding and developing the world's best track cycling team, which is nice, except that its relevance to 99% of Britons is SFA. Yet they will win a bunch of medals in Beijing, which will mean that they will get even more public funding in the next go-round.

<LOL> i can see you've never worked with projects part funded by govt money... its a nightmare.. they are probably better off with out it..
as a rough guide if your using govt money the project will cost 1/3rd more and they will fund upto 1/2 of the total.. so Its only just worth it.. they will also throw in lots more paperwork and red tape, so the project will take half as long again as it would have...
working with govt money never ceases to amaze me they will happily spend 20k to make sure that the 100 quid you spent on paperclips was the best value for money...... now thats what I call value for money. Oh and these days they'll also throw in all sorts of sustainability horse s

The part relevant to this topic was Claire Short (bless her hessian socks) referring to motorsport as a "hobby".
Hell of a way to refer to what i assume is still one of our larger export industries?
Categorising the sport on a "throw away" comment like that it's no wonder Government backing hasn't been forthcoming to date.

davidd - that was kind of my point. I think the motorsport industry is very good for this country.
Flemke - We think alike about the Olympic 2012 fiasco.
Graham - I have heard this said before about government involvement. But to be fair no one can waste money as fast as government, national or local.
