Formula One to return to BBC TV
The BBC has secured the television rights to Formula One from the 2009 season, it has emerged.

The five-year deal marks the return of the sport to BBC screens 12 years after ITV began broadcasting Grands Prix.

Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone said: "I am delighted to conclude this new deal with the BBC.

"It is an exciting time in Formula One and the BBC has some innovative new ideas to consolidate and expand our UK fan base."

The deal covers all platforms and will see F1 broadcast on the BBC Sport website, as well as on TV and radio.

Dominic Coles, BBC Sport director of sport rights, said: "The biggest motorsporting event in the world is returning home after 12 years.

"We were delighted when Bernie Ecclestone approached us about the return of F1 to the BBC.

"F1 is a crown jewel of sports broadcasting, so to bring the rights back to their traditional home from 2009 is tremendously exciting.

"Fans will be able to enjoy uninterrupted, state of the art and innovative coverage from BBC Sport, across all of our TV, radio and new media platforms, for the first time since 1996."

I'd pay an extra £10 on my license fee to keep James Allen out of it.

It's great news. I'm assuming and hoping that this will now actually 'Stop The Cock.'

Lets just hope the grass is really greener on the other side in this case, ITV have had their faults, adverts, the cock, missing post race interviews and not being flexible with the scheduling, but I also remember the BBC coverage, and as far as i remember it wasnt the best either. They wouldnt always show qualifying, they would sometimes start JUST before the race, with no build up.

Lets hope that they have been watching the ITV coverage and are going to improve on what we have all gotten used to.

Good news - My personal wish list:

  • Live practice
  • Live qualifying
  • Ben Edwards
  • Martin Brundle?

"Red button" options for:

  • Commentary OFF
  • Multi-View

With Freeview etc there wouldn't be a problem. I suspect they would always be able to show all parts on one channel or another (Having said that I would hope and excpect them to have at least qualifying, build up and race on BBC1 or 2 every race weekend).

I rather hope that they can persuade Martin Brundle to climb over the fence. He brings a lot to the coverage, and I would miss him (trying not to sound ghay or anything.. .. ..)

thinking about it some more, i do hope they give it as much 'respect' as soccer gets. full show from start to finish like ITV have done at times when they haven't cut us short.

FANTASTIC Get rid of those ITV ADVERTS and hopefully some of the dull presenters...

Maybe we will get someone like Julia Bradbury biggrin presenting!

in some respects you've got to feel sorry for ITV. they got the contract just as the last british star's career was on the wane (DH), endured 12 years of 'nearly' with DC and JB, and just as we get another british superstar, they loose the coverage.... unlucky....hehe

wonder how much the beeb paid for the coverage...

My thoughts exactly.

This is fantastic news... perhaps the BBC will actually do something interesting with the coverage,

When are slicks back? 2009?

HD BBC Coverage, no ad breaks, slicks, reduced aero wings, no TC, rising young talent battling it out at the front...

Hope so! The chain, F1, beeb, and murray walker would make F1 perfect viewing.
